I know this will probably start a debate but to me Metallica's Black album was the transition album to them selling out. Just my opinion. Anything before that they were a killer heavy metal garage band that didnt care about money, they were just raw in your face heavy metal. To me the rawness of the early Metallica is who they were. Then they changed their sound and started playing to a whole new younger fan base that never heard the early stuff. Just an opinion.

I agree 100% Stevieraywannabe, Metallica was my favorite band right up till the black album when greed and fame kicked in, all of a sudden they pulled a 180 and totally changed everything.

since i havent been listening to any new metal, everything sounds the same to me anymore just scream as loud as you can into the mic and call it a song...either that or i'm just gettin old....I'll have to go with some older bands from back in the day.

1. Black Sabbath , they were crazy hardcore for thier day, original, innovative
2. AC/DC again just raw ,in your face, stripped down metal
3. Pantera had a sound like nobody else, Dimebag was the man
4. Megadeth...Mustane may be a real ahole but they had some great tunes
5. Anthrax they weren't afraid to try some totally off the wall stuff, remember anthrax/public enemy
6. Misfits , elvis meets hardcore in some 3rd dimension
7. GWAR......what a show

Some of mind are unconventional metal but still Metal and at the top for me:

Nightwish
Stratovarius
Dream Theater
Black Mages
Opeth (even though I hate the growling I love the music)
Cannibal Corpse (mainly because their lyrics make me laugh)
Megadeth
Iron Maiden

I think that pretty much covers my favorites.

And now Ladies and Gentlemen, you now know who the Trans Siberian Orchestra is! They formed TSO after the band initially broke up. After the guitar player died the band was doomed from there , he was the backbone of the band.

Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Joe Satriani ( I know he is a guitar player but is still very metal )

Thats what most people think. That is the main reason I like Metallica. You can't listen to Metal 24/7 and start to tire it some and want to listen to something 'different' Thats when I pop in a post black album.

1. KISS
2. Metallica
3. Great White (Incredible guitar work)

I haven't heard of the band Jackyl for a long time. I saw them back in the early 90s. I sure miss those good ol' days. I think I saw them with Aerosmith.

If you need me I will be sitting here thinking of all those late 80s early 90s concerts I went to.

pdx and Ace.....the two biggest KISS fans on NLG.:D I haven't heard jackyl in ages either, and who can ever forget the famous chainsaw solo in the song the Lumberjack. I tried it once, and let's just say my neighbours weren't very happy with me. (Setting a VERY bad example for my neighbours young kids).
