Funky - What type of computer are you using? Mac or Windows.
If Mac, I would suggest using Garage Band just to get your feet wet. It is very easy to use and will help to get you ready for the big boys.
If you are using a Windows (PC) then you should check out Cubase. The scaled down version is very user friendly and gives you a lot of control.
For our band we recorded everything onto a Korg multitrack and then mixed it up in Garage Band on my Mac. Quick and easy. Granted I am going to redo all of them because you do not get the control you can from ProTools or the full version of Cubase. Either of those can be very costly but definitely well worth the investment.
Good luck...Scott (Lydia's Racket - http://www.myspace.com/lydiasracket)

I personally use Reaper and would highly recommend it.
