If you listen to a song like Canon rock, there's a 2nd lead guitar in the backingtrack to give the 1st lead guitar a thicker sound. The 2nd lead guitar plays the same licks sometimes but in a different key or octave. Is there like a formula for knowing what key or octave to play as a 2nd lead guitarist?

Thanks in advance

The second lead in songs like cannon rock or jessica is usally playing in the same key but in a lower octave and usally the third or fifth of the orignal note.
