I've seen people just leave them sticking straight off and I thought it was kind of stupid looking. Plus the little metal tips can scratch the head on your guitar or stab someone in the eye.

I loop mine around in tight loops on my acoustic. You can kind of see them on the right:

Pure cosmetic and image! I remember a lot of the 80's glam metal bands used to hang cigarettes of them and oh did they think that was cool!

I was going to post here about strings too but my question is what strings do you use and what do you like best?

I have used GHS Boomers, D'Addario, Blue Steel I personally like the GHS Boomers. I am looking for a string that has good sustain.

Yep. I seen it a lot when I lived in the south during the mid-90's; Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, etc. It was common with bar-bands there.

I did the cigarette-in-headstock thing but it was 100% function. I was smoking 3 1/3 packs a day when I finally quite.

I use D'Addario XL .009-.044 pretty faithfully but I also like the GHS Boomers too.The Blue Steel weren't bad a little overpriced I think though.

i cut the strings as close to the tuning post as possible. i've stabbed myself a number of times in my arms, hands and face because i wasnt paying close enough attention while i was going to pick up the guitar or while leaning over to get something

lol...you guys are missing the best part of leaving strings hang...lol...if you and your band mates..(other guitar and bass player) aren't polarized..those little suckers act just like a tazer...lol...we used to play.."zap, your it"....lol..in our youth...lol...i cut mine now tight to the end...Ian...glad you asked ther string question i was going to ask that too...i use Ernie Ball super slinky 9-42 on my V and Fender Super bullets on the strat....which are also 9-42...i wanted to know what people used and why...i'd like to have some practical knowledge of prefered strings and why cause i may change around with a few sets to just see what i think.

LOL Mitch that would be like having 6 hyperdermic needles sticking out the end of your guitar lol. I am planning to try some new strings, I want to at least try the DR Handmades and see what they are all about and they come in colours too lol, I was thinking red for me.

Let me know what you think of the DR's Ian.
I've been debating on trying some myself but can't find anyone who's used them :D

never heard of Dr's...but colors interest me...my friend uses boomers and he loves them...he says they cost a little more, but he doesn't feel you have to change them as often....i started experimenting..my first experiment was E/B's extra super slinky..8-36...to light for my tastes...even when not bending a string..they would move all over the place...so i checked them off the list...i used to use dean markley rock and roll lites...9-42...and they are ok...i seem to be stuck on that 9-42 range...i don't know if i missing out on something using that size range?
