I've used Audacity and found it very capable for recording, especially for free software.
As a guitarist, I bought a copy of Rifftracker mostly for practicing on my own and getting ideas recorded. When I do recordings that I want to share, I use Cakewalk as it gives me more control over how the sound is mixed.

Audacity is a VERY powerful program. Send me a clip and ill tell ya whats going on with it.. I suspect it is because you are not using a speaker/amp simulator (which is a must with direct recording)

Theres many of them.. the 2 most popular is a Line 6 POD and a Behringer V-Amp.
Or, you can do it with mic'ed cabinet. Which will give you the real sound, and not a simulated sound.

i believe its a virtual amp you can download from somewhere. where you can hook your guitar into the pc and play from there.

Did you finding anything? I am looking for a better way to record myself than just using my headset mic.

i have protracks, but just went a got
Acid software, just because it is so easy to toss some backing tracks together with it. you can downloas the free version which works the same but i am not sure if you can render it out to mp3 or anything like that.
