I won an Ibanez Gio gax30. Cheap guitar. I want something better and really want a Mexi strat, but also would like to keep the Gio for the humbucker sound. Is it worth upgrading the Gio? Or should I go find a used Schecter or something similar?
Also, I heard different strats have different necks on them, is this true? And are all strats scalloped?

Well, bad thing is I love all kinds of music. Country to folk, Clapton to Hendrix to Santana...bits of everything. I was thinking the Strat would be good because they seem to be so versatile.

dont bother wit the old crappy guitar, just get the strat and thats not true about the necks, all they do is come in different wood. and if you like the humbucker sound just put the pick ups onto the strat.
ps.
and plus the strat has 3 pickups on it so you can expirement with the sound
i got a mexican strat and i love it.

I like stratocasters, but.. I only like USA made stratocasters. This goes deeper than the playability of the guitar. For the most part, they are ok if they are from the usa or mexico, the others i would personally suggest staying away from.
Stratocasters can come in MANY many different configurations. They are one of the most popular guitars ever created, and have a TON of different configurations that they can come in.
I would suggest you going to your local guitar store and playing one. Play a couple different stratocasters and see how you like the feel. Different guitars, while being from the same manufacture and the same make, will almost always feel different to you.
Here is what i do when im guitar shopping.
I will go into a guitar store, and spend a good 6 or 7 hours in there, just playing with different guitars, adjusting them, basically, running them through the trenches to see how they react. Why do I do this? Because the guitar that I buy is going to be the one that I want. When your playing guitar, it is 95% skill, and about 5% guitar. If that 5% is lacking, you will be lacking. You really need to find somthing that fits you, suits you, and just feels "RIGHT"
Believe it or not, there are mass produced guitars out there that once you put them into your hands, will feel like they were made specifically for you ;)
Good luck in your search.

Here is an option for you. This isn't a mim but they are available in this pup configuration. MIM strats are available all over. Check out ebay or most any decent size shop around.

Hello,
My first guitar was a Gio Ibanez too!
Now I have an Ibanez RG 350 dx and I just love it.
The nick is thin and very quick.
I got it for an unbelievable 250$.
(I sold the Gio for 200$ :D :D )
I think the squier isn't a good option for you, they sound cheap ;)
A strat mex is offcourse allways a good thing to have in your guitar rack
For the harder work I prefer my Ibanez RG.
But hey, the decision is yours. Go out and play as much guitars as you can.
