Hi everyone
i have a sillyquestion.
Does anyone know of any good and if possible free
software that can convert sound files to different
formats? Example i extracted the sound off a
karaoke dvd but it turns out it came out as AC3
format, now i'd like to convert it to mp3 or wma
but cant seem to find a software that can do it.
If anyone knows i'd really appreciate it..
or if anynoe knows a software that will
extract the sound directly into mp3 tha'd be
even better.
Thanks in advance..

you may have a problem with that conversion...AC3 encoding is a surround sound file..which means it's being sent to 5 channels from 1 source ..hence 5.1 surround sound...i have successfully captured and converted ac3 codex with sonic foundry and adobe preimier...but it does lose something in the translation..premier lets you capture dvd video and audio streams separately so once you have that you can re-render just the audio file if you want...that's the easiest way i have found to do it.

I believe Audacity will handle that, but I may be wrong, however it's free. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Thanks for the link,
i tried audacity, but when it's importing the file
about half way trough it crashes, when i
import other formats, like mp3s etc.. it works
perfectly, so i dont think it's the program thats
bad. I looked at the extention and it came as
.vob whic confuses me cause the program i used
to extract the sound from, says it's AC3.
Also, i used GoldWave which is suposed to read
AC3 files, when i import it, nothing happens, it
does not play back. Still trying to figure out
how to do it...
Thanks for the help

Not sure if CDeX will do AC3 files or not...but it's free.
Works great for most conversions.

Wave pad by Swift sound has a free ware version. run it in the background and you can record anything as long as your sound card is duplex and you will know right away.
Hit record then minimize then play what ever and edit out the empty space when your done then save to whatever format you want even acc.
It’s legal for backups you just cant share or sell what you make.

I don't know if 6.5 will work..that was the last version right around the popularity of ac3 encoders....but the adobe site may have a patch for it...i use pro 2.0 ....cake walk is an excellent program...and the pro edition should have the ability and if not i'm sure they have the ac3 encoders for download...but don't hate dongle keys!!!!...not to many years ago i had 4 programs that all required that hardware key in the ltp port...you could piggy back them...but i swear it looked like my computer had a tail...i'm surprised you still need it...all the programs i had that did..don't anymore.
