I've recently been thinking about purchasing a Telecaster. I have a low budget, but i'm leaning towards a standard (made in mexico), but is there really any significant different from it and it's squire counterpart?

I was looking at a squire and thought that it looked pretty cool, but I never played on before, or at least, for more than one repeat of Iron Man. My friend owns one, I'll see what he thinks. I'll get back to you.

squier actually sounds really good if you replace the pickups.

What kind of pickups would be best? (I play mostly rock) And is the quality of the actual guitar itself different? I want something that will last me for a while.

I was also curious if there is any real difference between the mexico tele and the american tele.

the American teles are by far finer guitars than the mim teles, the mim ones use cheaper electronics, cheaper pickups, the fret work isn't as good. If you can go to a music store and try one of each, the american ones are much better, I own a Fender AMerican Deluxe Tele, the fret work, wood used, pickups and S-1 switching make for an awesome guitar, also the one thing I always had trouble with on a tele was the plank body cut into my ribs and I would get pretty sore after an our or so of playing, the American Deluxe teles have a countured back simular to a Strat, making them much more comfortable. Still a heavy workhorse guitar.

As EZ said, they're no comparison in MIM to MIA. The American'r are a lot better. I couldn't afford the MIA, but I ended up putting one on Lay-away till I can pay it off it played so much better. That was a strat though.

But, IMO, I would play a Nashville Deluxe Telecaster if I were you. They are MIM, but they have the same neck profile of the MIA which is more comfortable to me. They also have a strat pup in the middle posistion with a 5 way switch, so they're very versatile guitars. They can be had for around 500 bucks which I know is probably out of your range, but I think they're worth saving for.

Something to think about, but I would definately get at least the MIM and stay away from the Squire, by the time you mod them to make them good you could've bought the MIM, just make sure you try several different ones as the MIM quality is hit and miss.
