This is a direct result of watching Dave. I struggled with this song for a long time until I heard Dave say, "The key to this song is to mute the strings" (or something to that effect). Absolutely genious! Then it all came together.

Thanks, Dave!

Man you learned all those Zeppelin songs in a year?

I hope I'm half as good in that time!

Any secrets on your practice schedule during that time? Any tips?

Great job!

It might sound silly but this is what works for me:

I make sure that I play 6 days a week and that I have fun doing it. During weeks I'm not pushing myself I take a rest day. When I am pushing, I take 2 consecutive rest days. The days I do play could be for 5-10 minutes or 3 hours. For me personally it doesn't matter what I do or what I play as long as I pick up a guitar 6 days a week.

I prefer to practice using an acoustic guitar because it's far less forgiving than an electric guitar. It also helps me stay focused on actually playing instead of, say, blowing an hour fussing with pickups, trying to get the perfect tone from a stomp box, or fiddling with my amp. There's time for that later, but not when I'm trying to learn a song. I find that fiddling with my rig sucks the motivation right out of me.

I mostly practice from a set list which also helps minimize distractions. I find that without it I tend to play whatever pops into my head instead of what I need to work on. But I do allow myself distractions for fun. Typically I write a set list once a week and keep it on my music stand where I can glance at it during practices. Often half of the last week's songs are on that list so that I keep a mix of songs I know versus songs I'm learning. It helps keep everything fun for me.

When I'm having a particularly hard time learning a song I often put it away for days, weeks, even mothns. I've found that doing that makes the song easier to play the second time around. Mainly because I went off and learned more songs and when I came back to the problematic song I was much better.

Other than that I do all the usual stuff... play scales until they bore me (which doesn't take long) and do a lot of chord progressions.

For fun I like to pick a chord I've never played before from my chord book. Then make up my own songs and incorporate the new chord somewhere.

Dude you rock, have to say though as a drummer, John Bonham was the greatest drummer, there is not one song that I can't play on the drums, from zepplin, You kill me, you make it look so easy, hopefully in about 10 years or so I will be there. I will never give up, these videos are my inspiration. just mess up alot so I don't feel so bad. (HA!)

Hey Mr. "2 posts", let's see YOUR solo. At first I wasn't sure if you were joking or being serious. Until I saw your thumbs-down thing. Interesting how your first post in this forum is a request for the Free Bird solo and your second post you use to criticize me for not playing a solo. It's almost like you didn't even bother looking at my video dates to recognize where I'm at in my development as a guitar player. It also seems that you've neglected to read up on me here too so that you can understand and take in the broad scope of my work.

I'll bet you viewed my video in hopes of learning to play the solo. Then you probably got annoyed when I didn't. And then you opened your big mouth. Got news for you... I'm not here to please you, I'm not here to teach you, and I'm not here to tolerate you.

Choose your words wisely. Oh yeah, you probably overlooked the fact that you criticized a moderator too. Bad decision! You're lucky -- I think other mods here wouldn't give you another chance. But I will. Consider yourself on notice. One more post like you did me and I'll see you banned from the forum.

Your apology would go a long way toward keeping you around. It's entirely up to you.

We are a positive group. This forum is a great place for all skill levels (even yours) to receive advice, give advice and have some fun. We give constructive criticism. I'm sure your smart enough to know what constructive means as apposed to destructive. It is a bit unnerving to see somebody who doesn’t have the guts to post anything other than a song request and rude comments. If you want to just look at this forum that is your choice. If you would like to participate then I would be more respectful of the other members. It seems to me you are a contributing member of the forum. You haven’t posted any advice or solutions on how to help with anybody’s problem. The only thing you seem to want is somebody to hold your hand and teach you a solo.

It seems to me that you haven't given much thought to the subject of what goes into a song. Things such as timing, clarity of the chord/note, energy, style, improvisation, etc. are very impotent. If you were a lead player you would know this. If you played with other people you would know this. If you were a rhythm player you would know this. Are we to believe you are somebody without rhythm, playing with yourself and can’t take the lead? Judging from your articulately written scathing review I’m sure this isn’t the case.

I was pretty angry when I wrote that and I probably could've toned it down a bit. I've cooled out a lot since then and now I feel bad for some of the things I said.

I've been chatting offline with other senior members here lately and maybe it's worth sharing here. Here goes... In the last couple weeks I've had more than a few people ask me to play lead guitar parts. Some from here on the forum but mostly from outside the forum. I suppose that when people see me play guitar they for some reason assume that I can play lead. When I ask them why they would think that they invariably say, "Becasue I've seen your videos...". And I think to myself, "Why would you think that having seen my videos when I'm clearly playing rhythm guitar parts?" Playing lead guitar means vibratos, double-stops, string bending, all-out soloing, etc. Most of which I'm not seen doing on video. In fact, there are only 2 videos in which I'm playing a substantial lead guitar part -- Vertigo & Come Together. And I say "substantial", not minor stuff like the little repeating 3 note lead in Since U Been Gone. We could also argue that a song like Do You Wanna Touch Me is a lead guitar song. But really, it's a rhythm guitar playing lead.

So, while I'm very pleased that people think I can play lead guitar I'm also puzzled as to why they would think that based on my body of work. The leads parts I do play are carefully chosen because they match my current ability and they represent a challenge to me. And while I'd love nothing more than to play solos and stuff I just can't right now. But even I recognize the difference between a rhythm player and a lead player.

This is the debate that I'm raging with myself these days. Or as I've told others... it's Zep's inner dialogue. I struggle to make sense of it and sometimes I wonder if there's even any sense to make. But I find myself perplexed and saying to myself, "Self, just do what you're doing and everything will fall into place."

There you have it. All I can say really is to just keep watching. My videos are nothing more than me documenting my progress. One of these days I'll do a solo or something that will melt your face off.

Well I'm going to save everyone the trouble of responding to this. Thrasher... you're banned. Personna non grata. If I had seen it earlier, it would have saved everyone some time.

I said earlier there were no more warnings. Zep did a great job. We have no room for haters here.

Just be YOU. There's nothing wrong with just playing rhythm guitar! It's all *I* want to be able to do really well. It's just flat out a BLAST! You seem to be doing really great (IMHO) AND you're having FUN doing it. That's all that matters.
