I'm gonna sound like a complete newbie when askin' this and well I pretty much am. I just did my first string change on my Epiphone les paul standard and had a few questions on the way I did it.

On the low E,A, and D strings I did what the manual said by goin' thru the post then back around and under the string to lock it in place and then start winding, but I only probably got one wind completely around and then it was in tune even after stretching my strings. Is this ok or should it be wound more?

On the G,B, and high E strings a wound it once then thru the post coming out under the string I just brought around then wound it up to where the string coming out of the post was sandwhiched in between the two wraps. Am I doin' this right?

Also does anybody know of any good tools to help because I just have a plastic string winder and it kinda scuffed my tuner heads a bit when winding and I'm about to cry lol.

Sorry for this being so long but anything will help.

I typically make sure that there is at least 3 or 4 winds on the strings that are wound, and the strings that have no winding at least 6 or 7 turns around the machines.

As for the tools, I built myself an aluminum winder, with pads on the inside of the pocket to wind strings on the tuners.. Im sure there are other tools out there, but the better materials, will yeild in a higher cost. I made mine because i can just change the pocket to whatever style of tuner im working on, instead of having a "one size fits all". Keeps the winder from banging anything on the machine or headstock.

but I only probably got one wind completely around and then it was in tune even after stretching my strings. Is this ok or should it be wound more?As long as it's staying in tune it should be fine. Ideally you probably want around 2 or 3 wraps on these wound strings. In this tutorial the author uses 1 1/2 wraps.

On the G,B, and high E strings a wound it once then thru the postI've always liked around 5 or so wraps on these unwound strings. The added material provides extra friction and keeps the string from slipping or breaking at the point where it's inserted into the post. BB King winds up the entire string so if this happens he can continue reusing the same string. Said it was a result of growing up with little money.

This reminds me of a quote from the movie Days of Thunder. "Rubbing is Racing!". Sometimes it's just part of the game. I can't see how a plastic string winder could have hurt it too severely. I've been using them every week on 2 guitars for many years.

Take care!

Yeah, total noob myself, but i heard that you want as little turns as possible on the tuner cos it leaves less string to stretch/slip etc, which makes it go out of tune during your first few sessions with the strings.

Dont know if this is correct now, considering what people are sayin above. I just ordered a new set of medium guage strings for my fender acoustic. Elixir polyweb medium guage they are. Any advice for these strings,

sorry if im hijackin ur thread, Dusty

Yeah, media player just keeps giving this error message:

Windows Media Player cannot find the file. If you are trying to play, burn, or sync an item that is in your library, the item might point to a file that has been moved, renamed, or deleted.

You can find winders with pads and they are still pretty cheap. I think if you pay $10.00 us for one you are at the upper end. Go to a big music store or
