Best way to travel with a guitar on the plane?

I'm going away for week and have to fly. Any ideas on the best way to take my electric guitar and small amp? I can't take the guitar as a carry on. I'm assuming I should get a hardcase (should I pack the hardcase with clothes to make sure it is protected?) for the guitar and use the amp as a carry on?

I guess you should pack the hardcase with something soft because it can rumble a lot in there. Make sure you get no gaps betwwen the guitar and the case but for the amp i don't know.
