Fenders Rock! The only reason I bought an Ibanez is because I didn't have the cash. I do love my SZ520. I would suggest if your up for 500 to 1000 to look at the american stats. You can get away with one under a 1000 and apply 200 or so twards an amp. I would suggest playing the different models. On the american strats your going to get the better electric set up. The different models is going to be mostly pickups necks and such. Play a few. I know you hear that a lot in this forum. There is a reason.....its true. I just played (sorry I don't know the model) the best strat I ever played. Great feel and sound. They are not all the same. Have fun doing it. I'm a salesman so I don't feel bad saying this. Go into the biggest store in your area and work a salesman. Treat him well but....like a waiter at a restaurant. Have him get you want to play and don't be afraid to say "is this the best you can do?" That little phras will save you at least $50 bucks. (at least) I didn't know they could deal. I thought it was just like a sales rep at best buy or walmart. Nope they can save you a buck or two. Get a case cords or something. Good luck

Sounds like you've done your homework. My opinion (from my limited experience :) ) is that the Stratocaster is the best all-around guitar. Don't listen to me, though. Listen to Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck...
If you find a Mexican-made (MIM) Strat with a straight neck, buy it. Put the extra savings toward something else, like your amp. You can pick these up, used, with a case, for less than $300. You'll have a nice guitar for some RHCPs. Look around. Be patient and yours will walk right up to you, wagging its tail, saying, 'Take me home!'

I got a Fender American Deluxe Strat from ZZsounds for $1000. First do a web search for it (google) then check out all of the webs sites that has it, once you find the lowest price go to ZZsounds and use their price spy, email them the info on what you found and they will beat it. WIth mine becase of a minor problem with it apon arivial, they ended up knocking another $100 off, so I ended up with the American Deluxe strat for $900 delivered (sweet deal)

The MIM axes are pretty good, but I just played another Fender Highway 1. Sweet guitar. Probably the nicest thing I've played, along with a Gibson LP studio. I like the US made models over the MIM or China or Korea personally. That racks up the price some though.

a stratocaster is just a type of Fender guitars. The H-1 and Deluxe are types of Fender's.
If I were you, I'd get the Deluxe FMT Fatty, although that could be out of your price range.

Fenders are great guitars, my friend has a standard strat and its awesome. However, if i'm right the RHCP have more of a Rock n' Roll sound don't they? Idk, it just seems to me like a Epiphone Les Paul would fit with their music better than a strat, but you can get A LOT of different sounds out of a strat.

Hi, looking at John Frusciante Wikipedia page(link) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Frusciante) he's used the following guitars;
* Fender Stratocaster 1962 (3 tone sunburst, gift from Anthony Kiedis for re-joining the Band)
* Fender Stratocaster maple-necked '55 (2 tone sunburst)
* Fender Stratocaster 1962 (olympic white)
* Fender Stratocaster 1962 (red)
* Fender Telecaster 1963 Custom (3 tone sunburst)
* Fender Telecaster 1965 Custom
* Fender Jaguar 1962 (fiesta red)
* Fender Mustang 1969 Fiesta Red (used almost exclusively as a backstage warm-up guitar)
* Gibson Les Paul 1969 Custom Black Beauty
* Gibson ES-335 1956 Two Color Sunburst
* Gibson SG 1961 Custom Cherry Red
* Gretsch White Falcon 1955
* Fender Precision Bass Olympic White (rosewood fretboard)
So I'm guessing the Stratocaster :)
I'm in a similar position to you, I'm interested in getting an electric guitar (currently have a nylon classical acoustic) and I love the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. However I'm going to have wait a few months till I finish University and can afford one. Other guitars I'm considering are; (Note last two to be like Joshua Homme from Kyuss, QOTSA :D )
Black Epiphone LP custom (link) (http://www.thomann.de/gb/epiphone_lpcustom_ebony_lh.htm)
Cherry sunburst Epiphone LP standard(link) (http://www.thomann.de/gb/epiphone_les_paul_standard_cherry_sunburst.htm)

and the semi acoustic
Epiphone The Dot (http://www.thomann.de/gb/epiphone_the_dot_ch.htm)
I'll have to go and try them all out and see which on I prefer. The Fenders look the best value for money and I agree it would be helpful if someone could describe how they sound different.
Edit: someone should change the link colours so they are easily recognizable :)

they can differ many ways. the type of wood used for the body of the guitar, the type of wood they use on the neck and the fretboard. You can vary the shape of the neck, V-shape or C-shape are examples. You can have large sized frets, small sized frets. you can get 22-24 frets. You can have one signle coil pick-up, three single coil pickups, one humbucker, one humbker two signle coils. You can get floyd rose, fixed bridge, regular tremolo.
so many ways to get a fender...!

i dropped $300 on a mexican made strat. its one of the nicest guitars i've purchased. it motivates me to play because of the fast action and tones I can get from it. my bag is blues and rock. perfect axe for that.

Hello old beans
Don't want to upset anybody but do you get jap strats over in the US. Over here in the UK a couple of outlets import, jap strats made for the japanese market, and the ones I have tried are superb instruments for the money.
You get ash or alder bodies (2/3 piece), one piece maple or maple/rosewood necks and most importantly american electrics, i.e. Texas special pick-ups.
When I tried out several strats, it was second best behind the US vintage (but 1/3 the price) and better than the entry level US strat or the Mexican strats I tried, and only slightly dearer. So for a budget genuine strat I think they are worth considering, but only the made for the japanese market version, the official export models are nowhere near as good as they use basswood and japanese pick-ups.

I first tried a japanese 62 re-issue export model at Sound Control in Stockton on Tees. Redhouse and Rockshack in Leeds had S/H japanese market strats. I tried a few found them all pretty good then bought one on the web.

Thanks, I live in Middlesbrough so really close to Stockton's Sound Control. Hopefully they still have some in. The Rockshack website is closed. Places on web I've managed to find are

Hi what a co-incidence on a world wide site, I live in Guisborough.
I actually purchased my strat from your second link, and every thing was as stated in the ad, down to the most miniscule marks being highlighted, (if there is a mark any where he will point it out) and service was excellent, a rare commodity in the UK these days), just wish he' d had the Fiesta red one then, as I only bought it to play shadows tunes, (being more of a 60's blues and Gibson player) I only bought mine 3 weeks ago. But try several out my guitar tutors Mexican strat feels right for him, its horses for courses, although saying that If I could have afforded the US vintage!!!!!
