Hello good people!
So, I've been learning on my own for the past three months, bought all of the guitar for dummies books, but there's nothing like learning from a real human. Since finding this site a couple of days ago, I've progressed SO much. And I feel a lot more confident in my playing. THANKYOU DAVID AND TIM!!
But there's hardly any punk music on this site... I thought I'd offer up a video of a song I just learnt (and am slowly perfecting using NLG techniques!).
MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE - MY WAY HOME IS THROUGH YOU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85MdGzVpsrc)
(Just uploaded it, so the link might not be live yet. Sorry about that.)
Technques I learnt from watching David and Tim's videos:
- Powerchords.
- Powerchords consisting of just the root and the octave.
- Barre chords
- Muting unwanted strings.
- Palm muting.
- Staccato muting with the fretting hand.
- Strumming without losing your rhythm.
- You don't have to wear a hat to be an awesome guitar player, but it helps (and creates intrigue...;)).
Techniques I learnt from mucking around in the forums:
- AWESOME NECK SLIDES (I put about four in this vid just for the hell of it)
--------
I look like a dag, and my playing isn't as clean as I'd like, but I got really bad stage fright.
GUITAR:
Epiphone Les Paul 100
AMP:
I use Guitar Rig 2 (software amplifier/modler) through my computer (Intel Pentium 4 3.1GHz, 3GB RAM, Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2ZS Pro audio card).
If you have Guitar Rig and like my tone, use the T-Brett pre-set with extra gain, mids and highs, through the Lead800 cab setting.
-----------
This was SUCH an awesome and fun song to learn. I really really really enjoyed playing it over and over and over again (and over again :p)
I'm off to learn the 2nd guitarist part now - I want to nail that little solo. :)
Rock On! :)

Not bad, some of the octaves were a little funky. Sounded like dead notes at places with only the tonic being heard clearly. Also, I think there was a wierd rythme part you did but it was when the video was going in and out so maybe it was a sound issue with the video.

I'm not familiar with the song. BUT!... I liked it! That was one butane Les Paul rendering that's caused me to believe that you are bad-to-the-bone, Vax. Your palm muting was excellent, I could see you muting the low E with your middle finger (something I can't do), and that ringing C power chord at 1:02 was just chock'd full of goodness. And your staccato stuff after that C power chord, well, just tasty.
I didn't see any stagefright. In fact, you looked quite comfortable.
Consider me your newest fan. Please post more!
PS... also loved the "take that!" look into the camera at the very end. Nicely done!

Sounded like dead notes at places with only the tonic being heard clearly.Mmm, I stuffed up quite a lot of the fingering because I had a bit of stage fright. Lol, when I got into it again and forgot about the camera, I got better.
Also, I think there was a wierd rythme part you did but it was when the video was going in and out so maybe it was a sound issue with the video. At around 1:40?
The dahnah de dahnah on the B5? That part is meant to be there. The song is originally played with two guitars, (one EQ'd to the left and one to the right) and on that part one plays the rhythm, stops while the other plays it and then they come in together. You get this really cool stereo effect, but unfortunately I can't recreate it by myself... Wanna jam? :D
I'm not familiar with the song. BUT!... I liked it! If you like the song, it's only available as a bonus track on the 'Famous Last Words' single that's out now. Not too many people know it unless they've bought that single. Hehe. But, yeah, check out MCR if you like that one. Thankyou For The Venom (from their second album) especially. Or for a classic rock influence, try their latest album (The Black Parade), and maybe some stuff from their first album if you like it a little bit more hardcore and punkish.
Consider me your newest fan. Please post more!Lol sure thing. :) Lemme learn something else first. :D But you're awesome. Your comments have given me such an ego boost and I'm going to be unbearable for the next week. :p Take THAT! lol!

Lol... for some reason I can only do slides with Guitar Rig. I can't do them through my amp yet. If I turned it up a bit more, it would probably work... but will deafen the neighbours!

Hey vaxwell,
To be honest, I have friends back in the states who are really into MCR, but I've always been into "harder" music and never really liked their taste. After listening to your video though, I'm gaining a newfound sense of appreciation for them, at least musically.
You may have had stage fright but it didn't show. You seemed to be rocking out and really enjoying the song, I liked that fact that you banged your head at appropiate times. I don't know enough about guitar to criticize your technique but props for stage presence. :)
