ok i know theres gotta be a few of you who own dogs here. who has experience with pitbulls and or dobermans?

reason I'm asking is in the past week I seem to have become the home of wayward pitbulls. Now I have never been much of a dog person, just never really had any good experiences with em but my gf convinced me to let her babysit her friends baby pit last week.

she actually turned out to be the best dog I ever dealt with and by the end of the week I was really depressed that she had to leave :(

well today my gf calls me and says her same friend had another pit who is 4 yrs old, actually it was her ex's dog and he couldn't keep it where he was staying and he was going to take it to the shelter, the chick freaked out and told him to bring the dog to her knowing full well she cant keep a pit in her apartment. So of course my gf puts me on the spot askin if she can leave it with us till she finds a place for her.....

so here i am , I have 2 cats that pretty much rule the house and a 5 yr old daughter who stays with me every week and I'm on the spot with deciding the fate of this pitbull which i know nothing about and i'm worried that shes going to eat my cats or bite my kid. So they convince me to let her bring the dog over and see how she is around the cats and whatnot.

turns out, this dog is a big ole baby, she looks real mean and barks even meaner, looks like she'll tear your arms off and yet shes the most laidback , sweetest thing in the world, she could care less about the cats and all she wants to do is lick you to death and lay in your lap

I have a totally different outlook on pitbulls, properly trained they are not bad dogs, they arent vicious killers. but a few people seem to have given an entire breed a bad image....matter of fact I think I'm going to keep her

just wondered if anyone else has pits and if they have similar experiences with them and their image.

and the reason i ask about dobermans is that I really want to get one, my plan after the baby pit went home was to get a dobe pup and still is, I've done a ton of research on dobermans and I know what i'm getting into . i'm just concerned about the pup around this pit, she grew up with 3 other dogs and never bothered them so I dont think it'll be an issue, any thoughts?

I've been a dog owner my whole life..my mom was on the board of the humane society...doing the rescue thing...bla bla bla....i always had dobes and boxers...i have one of each right now...i've also been exposed to the prejudice brought on by having what people think are "bad" dogs...i can't own a pit bull... because of the stigma they have, our local government has heavy restrictions on owning them..you must pay and registor them at city hall..you have to have a sticker on your house saying that a pit bull is inside..they must be leashed and muzzled if you walk them in public..it's a real hassle for just one breed..my boxers are always beeing mistaken for pits and i have had to prove with their akc papers that they are boxers so i don't get fined for the pit rules...i do love dobes..amazing breed..very very loyal to their owners...very very protective of family members...our dobes always seemed to be "on guard" 24/7 ..not mean..but just conscience of whats going on around them...the only down side to them is they have a shorter lifespan then other dogs..9-10 years...we actually had our home owners insurance cancelled because the agent told us that dobes are under the "bad" dog clause on our policy...for you getting a pup...you always have to be careful with pups and adult dogs when bringing a new one into the house...not just a pit issue...some take to them right away..some don't...just keep the pup away from what the older dog would consider her bed...or corner of the room...and their food dishes...introduce the pup to her outside and let them get used to each other before they both come in the house..
i honestly believe there is no such thig as a bad dog...just bad dog owners...

As a mailman I am completely biased against pitbulls and other naturally agressive dogs. Sure they can be trained, but the vast majority of owners are retarded - so even on the off chance they have good intentions they do not know how to properly train the dog.

IMO Own whatever dog you want, but if you have no experience training a dog, get it done professionally.

speaking of retarded owners, this totally ghetto chick moved into the townhouse a couple doors down from me. She owns a husky that she just lets run the neighborhood all day and night, she has another little yippie dog, some little pocket type dog that she keeps inside 1/2 of the time. She's hardly ever home and this dog is just free to roam. So today I go to take Beta (the pit) out in my back yard, which has a 6ft privacy fence but is missing 2 slats. well Beta about takes my arm off darting for the fence because this chicks husky is out there with her head sticking in the fence.

Beta really had no interest in the husky other than to lick it's face but it was one of those what if situations, if my pit had gone after this dog who has it's head sticking in my fence I would have been accused of having a "vicious pit"

later i go to take her out of the front gate and here's the husky and her other little dog right at my gate and she's actually standing there at the sidewalk lookin at ME and tellin her dogs "ohh would you two stop bothering people"
then lookin at me, in my yard with her dogs all up in my pits face.

does she try and get her dogs to come to her??? nope, she just says ohhhh, yippie pocket dog....that pit is gonna have you for lunch even though she wouldn't but some people are so ignorant.

I agree with you 100%, all dogs should be obedience trained, and if you dont know how to do it then get them to a pro. thats the reason I never liked dogs, most of em i dealt with had zero training and they were running the house. now that I've dealt with a few that have been trained I have a whole different outlook on them.
