Anyone have this problem with their white guitars? I have a 1986 (aprox) Fender Squire Katana. It's white, but seems to be fading to a yellow. I don't know what to use to bring it back to life. Any suggestions?

sorry rhodes i'm no help but i'll watch for answers to...when i bought my flying V back in 1981 it was pure bright white...it's now a cream color...the pick guard however is still as white as it was when i bought it...i doubt if you can restore the color without striping it down...but i'd be curious to see what people say to do.

Instruments finished in nitrocellulose lacquer not only tend to craze with greater ease than the newest catalyzed finishes but they also yellow with age. Instruments normally consist of a color coat and clear coat, with the exception of a natural finish which is just clear coated. This top clear coat will yellow with age. This can turn a white guitar yellow and, since blue and yellow make green...older blue instruments can eventually take on a much more green appearance. This phenomenon is a simple fact of life. While it's true that UV rays may accelerate the process (just peak under a pickguard), nothing can be done to stop nitrocellulose from yellowing. In fact, like crazing, it is a common and expected occurrence.

So buffing it out is probably not going to work then I guess.

Dip it in a vat of bleach?

No don't!!! But would you be interested in stripping off the top coat and refinishing it?

i was going to strip mine down at one time...i wasn't playing at the time and was doing airbrush art for people so i thought it would be cool to do my guitar and use it as a show piece...but in the end i figured i'd mess it up tearing it apart and putting it back together...i was going to use amerflin paint like they use on aircraft...i used it on goalie helmets i airbrushed and it is extremely chip resisitant....but in the end i figured i'd let it age gracefully like it's owner....lol....NOT

Wow, I think you are the only person who actually *doesn't* want their finish to age! :p
