I'm still very much a beginner, so when I get together and jam with friends and I get asked to improvise, I still can't do very much. I'm still in the process of unlocking the entire neck and building finger strength.

One thing I really want to add to my skillset is good use of double stops. I feel that if I can work these in, (even though I can't play very fast up and down the neck yet,) that I can give what I can play more texture.

Do any of you know the basic theory behind double-stops, as in what the relationship between the two notes you're playing should be?

Also, if you know any double stop exercises, I'd greatly appreciate sharing them.

Thanks.

double-stops are just playing two notes at the same time right? either striking them at the same time and/or bending them together? i notice its usually a string above or below the note you want, same fret generally too.

..wish i had some solid info for you, im just learning too

Yeah, it's playing two notes at once. I'm looking at which two notes to play to create the proper sound though. As in, should it always include the root of the key you're playing in, and what can you combine that will sound good.

a 5th chord is just a double stop. i play those often on bass.
not the most common but playing the same note on the high and low e at the same time is cool sounding to me. octave double stops are cool. white stripes have a cool song with that goin on throughout, cold cold night
pretty much toy around and see what sounds good. figure out what key ur playing in and use combinations of the scale. try 1st and 4th together, 3rd and 7th or anythign you can think of to try.
