Its always best if you go to the guitar store and play a couple. I would suggest having a price in mind when you get there. Stay with in your budget and play a few. Solid-state or Tube are going to be your main two choices other than brand. Its kind of a generl consenses that Tube amps sound warmer and therefor better than solid state. Tubes amps are more money (usually) and take much more maintenance. I would suggest a Fender Champion 30 or something like it. It has a 10 inch speaker in it and sounds great. Its an awsome practice amp. It will get you to where you want to be. Just my opinion.

At this point in time, I have a Fender G-Dec (15 version) and think it is a great starter transistor amp, that has loads of presets, with adjustable drum, bass, and distortion settings, along with built in tuner. Depending on where you play and the availability of volume allowed, the G-Dec suits smaller room and practice needs. However, I am looking to move into a tube amp in the near future, but the G-Dec suits all me right now. :)

I've always been a fan of Fender amps. I have a supersonic, a tube with really nice and versitile settings. I used to use (and still have) a Fender champion 30. The champion is between 4-6 years old and has never been taken to a shop for maintenence, and it still sounds good. The supersonic is a tube so it needs maintenence but it's still has to be broke in. The champion 30 has a hummmmm to it, but everything else is solid and nice. If you going to get a champion, get the 30. the smaller versions aren't built as well and need routine maintenence.

I'll second that recommendation.

Check out the amps by Kustom. I've got a Kustom 16DFX. It's got a 12" Celestion speaker and a few effects and was cheap. It sounds really nice too.

I would probably go for a Roland cube 30W or 60W with some built in effects. These are cheap and sound really great.

Except for their cabs, thats what is holding them back. The $600 Crate BV + A mesa or marshall cab= Mesa sounding.
