You need to either get an adapter for your guitar wire that will make the plug smaller. Or you need to get a mixer.

The line-in plug where you would plug in speakers.

would you not want to plug that in where the microphone plugs in? It is an input you are trying to do. Speakers are an output. I didn't think you could plug a guitar directly into the computer without some sort of interface. I the sound will have to be amplified right?

I've done it before, with just a guitar and a computer. It seems to pick up the sound alright, but it sounds a bit tinny when you play it back. That could've been my awful strumming though. You don't really need an amplifier in between, but I reckon it helps.

My bad I meant mic not speaker. Forgive me and my hangover.

Sheepster when you say you plugged your guitar in direct without an amp are you talking about an electric or an acoustic electric? I've been wanting to do some recording and wasn't sure how to go about it. I have a microphone but then you get all of the ambient noise.

Yep. Electric. I used my cheap electric strat-style guitar. One of those starter pack deals from eBay. If that is able to make a listenable noise when plugged into a computer, I'm sure a greater guitar is capable. I've not tried my new one... maybe I'll try that now.
For recording your guitar work, I'd just buy a half-decent microphone and try to mute the background noise. You can get mono-directional microphones that only pick up sound from one direction. They could be useful, I guess.
But if you want to try an electric straight into the computer, find yourself an adapter and plug the guitar lead into the microphone socket.

What software did you use to record or edit your playing. I have audacity downloaded to my computer It's free if anyone is interested in recording editing software to fool around with.

At the time, I used a fairly ancient sound recording program called Goldwave. I actually found Audacity just a few weeks ago, and that seems just as good, if not better. From now on, I'm sticking with Audacity.

I'm going to give it a try with my acoutic electric to see what the sound quality is like. Thanks

You can also use a Guitar Port.

Very nice hardware. Or you can buy guitars with built in MIDI ports as well as the standard analog ports. This allows the guitar to interface directly with the computer.
