I have a few songs I'm working on.
Sting - Shape of my heart
AC/DC - Thunderstruck
Scissor Sisters - Take your momma out
Dixie Chicks - Voice inside my head
Eagles - Hotel California (Original Version)
I have a dozen or so more ... but those give me a good workout. I'm having real problems playing Voice Inside My Head all the way through without major hand cramps from the bar chords.
And AC/DC ... well Angus is my hero. I'll play anything from him anytime I get the chance. His idea of effects is turning the volume up. No peddles or such. Sweet.

Im beginner too. I'm working on my strength and speed for the barre chords. Im practicing Metallica (Nothing else matters, Enter sandman) and RHCP Under the bridge, and a couple of begginner songs just for fun.
I'm waaay too slow for the solos but its just a question of time :D

I tried to play the intro of Thunderstuck, but I think I simply do not have the required strength in the fingers yet. I'll try again in a couple of weeks.
For now, I'm learning 'What breaks a Heart' from Joe Satriani. It's a really cool song, pretty easy and there is a sequence in it which is a really good stretching exercise for me.

With my new found enthusiasm, I've been trying to learn lots of new stuff:
Steve Hillage - Radio (Nailed at last)
Mike Oldfield - Guilty (Getting there)
Rainbow - Stargazer (Just started, how cool is that track?)
Beethoven - Moonlght Sonata (Back to this after a long lay off)
Steve Howe - The Clap (I'm not really good enough to play this)
Renaissance - Northern Lights (Just about nailed it)
Steve Hillage - Salmon Song (just started)
Steve Hillage - Palm Trees (Almost there - much mellowness)
There's so many I want to get my teeth into, but I should be doing exercises to really.

Which song have you not heard? Layla is by Eric Clapton, Walk this way is Aerosmith or Run DMC depending on version you want, But there is really only one version Aerosmith it is and under the bridge is Red hot chili pepers

Thunderstruck by AC/DC is a good one if you play the intro one-handed like Angus does in the video, while in actuality he picks every note which I find harder. I play it one handed with hammer-ons and pull-offs but use my pick finger to mute the 2 strings next to 'B' string to cancel accidental noise.

I'm finishing up the following songs. I have them down, but can't quite play them at performance speed (I'm close!):
Walk, Don't Run by The Ventures
Wind Cries Mary by Jimi Hendrix
I'm starting to work on:
The Pusher by Steppenwolf
Finally, I am also learning a fingerpicking duet with my daughter. Our instructor wrote this piece and we'll perform it at our music school's next performance at the end of February.

Hey Boogie,
So you and your daughter are taking lessons together? That's very cool. My son and I are learning together. We were taking lessons together but he's in high school now and has 2 music classes(both guitar) this semester and 1(jazz band) music class next semester so he didn't think he would be able to keep the practicing straight. I wish we had classes like that when I went to high school. If we wanted music you played a brass instument(I played baritone or a woodwind) His school also has a vocal class and dixie band plus a few more I can't remember how cool is that.

when my son was in high school he came in one day and says "alright i think i want to learn how to play the guitar", very matter of factly. so i started showing him some chords and basics. well he blew past me in a very short time. by the time he was in college he and his cousin were playing in a band. he plays more accoustic than electric, does a lot of finger picking and some slide work has done some writing and recording. so the message is, yes its great to share this with your kids but be prepared to see them leave you in the dust!

Blewbyou,
Yeah... we have the same instructor, but separate lessons. Sometimes our lessons overlap a bit. For example, with this duet we are learning, we are going to be taking a bit of both our lessons to work with our instructor on various areas of the song.
My daughter (14) is really into learning fingerpicking. I'm into learning a bit of everything.
Anyway, enough of me and my daughter. Let's hear what others are learning. :D

Currently learning How to Save a Life by The Fray because after I watched the video linked to on our Song Request forum I was totally inspired to learn this song.
If some of you haven't read the thread in that forum and haven't seen this video you must watch it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryKp8QYA8io
I am practising my ass off to get this this right!

I've kinda grown tired of all the songs in G, C, D, Am, Em whatever so I've been trying to learn something harder. "Outside" by Aaron Lewis is one I'm working on and well as "Plush" by STP.
I'm basically trying to get my transitions smoother from open to barre chords and back.

there is a much easier way to play that chord.that scary b thingy..just play the 11th fret the 1st string and the 3rd string.all there is to it..play the 2nd string open..just to try it, hold down the 4th string on the 9th fret you will see it sounds just the same as the open string you are hitting.strum those 3 strings and there ya go..ya got it...no point making something so hard huh?

I have been trying to learn Santana's "Europa". I can play the 1st half of this piece and then I just start to go off somewhere in my mind and jam.
I guess I need to get more practice in. This is one of those 1/2 songs I know, which are a lot.
When I first heard this song many moons ago I thought to myself that if I could play this I would have something.
If you never heard Europa try to find it somewhere and listen to it. I think it is one of Santana's best tunes.

I'm trying to break a few 'self taught' bad habits but as far as songs go, I'm working on RHCP's 'I Could Have Lied'. I've got the entire song down and working on the solo now. Man, John Frusciante was 20 years old when they put that album down. He's a prodigy in my book.

I did the same thing with that song. I found it relatively easy to learn just using tab. Well, right up until the speed really picks up. That completly went over my head so I havent even messed with it in a while.
The great thing is that it is a song that helps you to start to learn to use the inflection of the notes with hammer ons, pull offs, and bends. I was always impressed with myself when I would play the part I knew. :D

What I am working on now:
Dead or Alive - the riff Dave taught - would like to learn the rest
Sweet Home Alabama - the two riffs Dave taught - I'm ok with that for now
Sultans of Swing - Daves lesson -getting better but have to set my drum track much slower than the actual song still - want to learn the solos but I think it is down the road a little ways
Should I Stay or Should I Go - Daves lesson - I love playing this one. I am a little slow going from the open to the barre chords in the chorus but getting better each time.
Hotel California- Daves lesson - playing this one on acoustic and pretty much have the changes down - just working on an arrangement ..... so to speak.
Walk the Line - got the intro and a good version of the chord changes for each verse - not completely happy with my strum pattern yet.
Folsom Prison Blues - just getting started - can play the little lead in intro and about half of the solo so far. I am trying to pick it up from listening and watching other guys play it so it is slow coming.
That is pretty much what I am working through now. I have a long list of stuff I want to learn and I am trying to exercise some patience. I love Dave's lessons and I seem to pick them up pretty fast but I also find that since I have been watching them, it is easier to learn other stuff.
What I really want to work on is the ability to just improvise over backing tracks or drum track or something. Hopefully I will get the time to join the site soon and start digging in to that type of lesson.

Doug I know what you mean with Europa, but don't worry about playing it note for note, improvise it and play your own thing, when I learnt it I found myself straying off the tab and adding my own parts, it's a great way of building up your improv skills, just get the 'feel' right, Carlos always says "it's all about tone". I've seen him play Europa several times and he always plays it differently.

I don't train or anything like that, although I should. I simply just do not know what to play or train on. Whenever I hear a good song, Ill look it up to try to play it. But as far as my skill, I would like to know how to play some songs, without my teacher telling me try the crabwalk finger exercise.
Can you guys offer me any help or ideas as to what BEGINNER songs I should learn how to play?

Smoke on the Water by Deep purple is pretty easy
Iron Man by black Sabbath is pretty easy too
And a whole bunch of Green Day songs are easy but I dont like that band all that much.
Follow this link and click on some bands you like and it will give you easy guitar tabs for them or chords http://guitar.about.com/library/bleasysongs_band.htm

I got the rest of the song down so all i need to learn is that stuff I'm learning Stairway To Heaven at the moment. It was one of the first songs I tried to learn, but I never learned it all, so I'm coming back to it now. I'm going to get it down "cold" (as people seem to be saying a lot). beginner here as well, Pretty much trying to learn anything I can play which thanks to Dave and Tim is most everything here. But am really intrested in learing blues riffs so working on Cold shot from SRV for starters. I got my first guitar about 5-6 years ago and self taught myself some stuff using tabs but I never really got anywhere with it. It's been so long that I barley remember anything except a few riffs here and there which isn't very inspiring to pick up the guitar, Then everytime I do pick it up to try and learn somthing I get fed up with it and quite, Since I found NLG here I've been going through Dave's beginner lessons and am up to learning Patience by Guns N Roses

I'm working on the awesome beginners lessons with David, currently practicing chords and just starting on chord changes.
The finger stretches are helping with my voicing of some chords which i find a bit difficult, like the g and c.
I was watching some mad-crazy shredding vids on youtube earlier though and thought  ;)
Enjoy the journey. :)

Firstly i just want to say its great reading through a thread like this and seeing everyones various influences and inspirations!
Right now im spending most of my time resurrecting alot of the stuff i was doing with my band about 5 years ago before it all turned to you know what! (which not coincidently was around the time i unfortunately gave up the guitar, until about 7 months ago that is)
Im trying to get into a few other songs as well, mainly
Hellrider - Judas Priest ( :eek:solo may take 100 years or so to learn though)
Worth Fighting For - Judas Priest (almost finished)
Resurrection - Pagans mind
And thanks to the video that brought me here (Lay it down) im probably going to have a go at some Ratt stuff very soon :)

 Thats exactly how I do it too, ive tried the picking too without much sucess.
Anyway i'm trying to learn Ailses of White by The Butterfly Effect, my Dad got me started by showing me some of the scales it sounds likes, and im going from there. Ive got a bit of the solo down so far but thats it.
Allthough its a but harder to pick out what Puddles is playing because on the record it sounds like a lot of reverb and effects (making it harder for me to pick out), plus the intro is pretty dim, and I'm only a beginner, so its taking a while. And all the tabs Ive found on the net arent any good.
If anyone could give me any quick tips or hints that would be awesome.

Am learning many things at the moment, working on my repertoire of Beatles songs and an excellent soft rock group called Bread.
On the technical side I'm trying to speed up my playing of Steve Vai's Eugene's Trick bag and overally just mess around with various exercises. Getting the grasp of sweep picking slowly too.

Oh yeah, and Ive been doing System of a Down - Roulette.
Very easy if you play it in standard tuning just sliding up and down the two strings. Ive got it 95% complete, only part I havent got down is at the end of the solo where I think he does some hammering thing. Does anyone know the bit im talking about (and how to play it?)

Today I popped up by book my Hans Rieschman on Manual for Paino and started putting some of the lessons on guitar, namely dynamics, attack and, to a point, putting the guitar on my lap and tapping on the strings as if it were a keybord with diverse strength to see what came out.
Point of lesson: I need to have an average "louder" picking strength when playing normally just to give me more dynamic range when I want to really bring out a note (ie. pinch harmonic + plucking so hard you'd think the string will yank and break :p). Funky stuff innit?
Edit: Considering getting myself one of these:

This poses a good additional question for me.
most of the songs / riffs i know, i really can't play perfect. Timing is off and my technique is sloppy.
Do you guys often practice your songs closer to perfection before trying to learn new ones.
i have a habit of wanting to learn new and play a variety; and assume perfection will come in time?

When I first started playing, I did the same thing. That left me able to play about 10 songs, however I played all 10 of them badly ! I would get bored with one song and learn another. Now I will not work on any more than 3 songs at once. I will get them as close to perfection as possible before I will learn another one. I found this made me a much better player !

some 1/2 songs that I have been playing every time I pick up the guitar are:
RHCP - Scar Tissue, Tell Me Baby, Snow
Metallica - Fade to Black, One
yeah these two are my favorite bands. As some people mentioned, I think it's better to focus on a couple of songs and perfect them before moving on to the next one. So right now my biggest goal is to play Fade to Black the whole song. I'm working on it slowly and I got the rhythm part and intro solo down, and I still need the second solo, which will be the biggest challenge... Is anyone working on or know how to play this song? I'd like to hear your insights.

Within the last couple of weeks I've learned Finger Elevens "one thing", Danko Jones' "first date", The Beatles "blackbird", and Bethovens "ode to joy" for my students.
This may not be ideal advise for everyone, but I encourage all practicing guitarists to have a list of "multiple" songs to learn and hack away at.
Having something else to fall back on to learn will help anyone who may be struggling with a particular phrase or riff from becoming to discouraged It should and will expand ones repetoire of tricks and techniques furthering their ability, henceforth making them a more rounded and capable player.

I had the same problem, what i did was to practice it so much that eventually your fingers get used to staying in that position. I found the best way was to slide from (in this case) F to G over and over, eventually the power chord shape will become natural wherever you move it from/to.
What helped me also was to concentrate on 'leading' with my finger highest up the neck (fourth finger) and just letting my 2nd finger follow it, not really thinking about it. Hope this helps and good luck ;)

Alison is pretty challenging, but this dang song got stuck in my head after watching Dave. Went to youtube and watched the original; never listened to Elvis C. before. Very cool -
