View Full Version : What song do you wish you had written?

I'm driving home from work today and I was listening to Pearl Jam.

Yellow Ledbetter to be exact (one of my favorite songs of all time!).

As I was listening I thought to myself:

"Man I wish I had written that song/created the guitar parts for it".

So I thought it would be an interesting topic to hear from others- what song/guitar playing do you wish you had created (regardless of your current skill level)?

Again, mine is Yellow Ledbetter.

What's yours?

The song I wish I had written would have to be KISS' War Machine, I listened to it for about 5min and next thing you know I'm rockin out at home and school, it is only like 4-5 cords the whole song, one of them being a Power cord.

What a fantastic topic!
The problem is I can't narrow it down to just one. I wish I wrote them all. I'll have to think about it and get back to you. My people will contact your people:cool:

Lets overlook the obvious (Hendrix, SRV, Zeppelin,GnR etc) and go with older underappreciated stuff.

Molly Hatchet - Fall of the Peacemaker
Molly Hatchet - Flirtin' with Disaster

Boston - Smokin
Boston - Rock n Roll Band

Bad Company - Shooting Star
Bad Company - Rock N Roll Fantasy

Well time to practice...

Ha! Great topic. And I can answer it in two words.

Free Bird.

The greatest rock song ever made. I so wish I'd have written it. I would never need to do another thing.

Like I posted earlier there are just so many but I would have to say Sweet Home Alabama is right up there one of my all time favs. It has to be one of the most recognized songs ever written. Plus it keeps surfacing in commercials and on TV and the movies so I'm thinking It's done OK money wise also.

Hmmm as already been said it is so hard to choose. Some are rock hard and some are beautifully simple. But out of the many would be:-

Queen - Tie Your Mother Down, Stone Cold Crazy.

Metallica - Nothing Else Matters, One

AC/DC - For Those About To Rock,

Rainbow - Stargazer, Since You've Been Gone.

Rush - La Villa, Lakeside Park.

Pink Floyd - All of them.

Various Others - Clasical Gas, Deer Hunter, Hey Joe, Freebird.

Dir En Grey - Ain't Afraid To Die

with more.

Hmm... Too Many...

Green Day - Boulevard Of Broken Dreams

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

Angus And Julia Stone - What You Wanted

No Doubt - Don't Speak

I think there are just too many... But No Doubt's "Don't Speak" is most likely the one I had wished I had written the most. Lyrics and All...

I really wish that I had the talent to write Satch Boogie, by Joe Satriani, or Trademark by Eric Johnson.... or electric gypsy by andy timmons, I really could go on, so I'm going to put a sock in it before I start excessively rambling like usual;).

Machine gun, izabella, purple haze.
But... id have to say life by the drop more than any of those, such heartfelt lyrics with some nice acoustic blues. (Stevie ray vaughan rules!)

Im gonna go with Glycerine by Bush. Probably one of the most simple songs I know, but beautiful lyrics IMO. Gavin is an amazing song writer, and this song is just full of emotion. Gives me the sniffles, heh.

Without question, Stagger lee, preferably the version done by Nick cave & the bad seeds. The whole murder ballads album is pure genius, but that rendition of a timeless song topic is so beautifully and disgusting at the same time, one can't help but love it!

great thread topic! as for me i guess it would have to be the song i haven't wrote yet. it'll have to come from the heart, have meaning and not just rhyme. the first song i ever wrote...that i kept, was born from the death of my three year old daughter. it's about how Heaven would be without children there.
i guess to answer the topic question i wish i had written roger miller's "old friends" as performed by him, ray price, and willie nelson.

Sounds cool! Almost sounds like the same concept Eric Clapton used for his song Tears In Heaven, that song was about his son who had died.

I never even thought about the song I have been writing for about a year now! My first attempt at writing an all guitar 'Satriani" type song called Cruel Rain. I have a vid of me playing it on you tube.
