ibanez rg is probably one of the best guitars you can get for that money. Try not to buy a squire.

I got MIM stratocaster in good shape for $200 so if you can find something like that its not a bad route.

I kinda agree with looking for good used, guitars in the 200 to 300 range are way better than they use to be, but if you can find a good used guitar locally you could end up with a 5 or 6 hundred dollar strat or something like that for your money

Ibanez GRG170DX is a very nice guitar for beginners. I don't own it but i've played it in a music store. You can see the review and sound demo of this model on YouTube.

One thing i didn't like about this guitar was the tremolo. This guitar doesn't have locking nut/tuner, therefore this guitar will go out of tune if you use the tremolo arm very often.
I suggest you to have a look at Ibanez RG321MH : http://www.zzounds.com/item--IBARG321MH . It looks very decent and has a fixed bridge. But the tone of this guitar is wonderful. Mahogany body, 24 jumbo frets, wizard II neck (fast neck). Its a perfect guitar for beginners and intermediate players.
If you could add $100 more into your budget then go for Fender Standard Stratocaster (Made in Mexico). http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Standard-Stratocaster-Electric-Guitar?sku=516037

Ha thx for your opinion. I'm getting the Ibanez GRG170DX though b/c I don't really use the whammy bar(if thats the tremolo arm). Also when I get my job in the summer I probably will get a Fender Stratocaster or a Flying V.
