Here is my problem, my brother and I have fender strats.

I don't like my maple fretboard, but I do like my vintage sunburst color.

My brother doesn't like his rosewood fretboard, but he likes his red color.

We want to know, can we switch the necks easily, or is it a pain in the butt.

You should be able to swap the necks. Both guitars are the same design so it shouldn't be an issue.
Just take your time and you should be fine :)

Disobedience is right. I recently took the neck off on of my guitars and was supprised as to how easy it was. Do not rush. Take your time and only switch the necks. (keep the screws with the same guitar) If you have problems you can always take it to a tech.

but what about the tension that is supposed to be on the neck at all times. you can't get that tension if it is off of the guitar. Or should I be okay if it is only for a short time.

that is the tension rod adj for the type and gage of strings and the bow of the neck, It might need to be adj once you are finished but its not a big deal, Fender has all that information on their web site, Althought the base of the neck and the neck socket on the body of the guitar are the same on most strats, there are sometimes diffenraces in the thickness (ie fretboards, frets, )thats what bridge and truss rod adj. are for. If you really run into trouble you can always switch them back.

If your not sure I'd say definitely take it in to your local guitar shop, but as mentioned earlier they should be able to do it no problem as long as the guitars are identical

The necks and bodies on solid body Fenders are very sturdy. The tension is not a factor on Strats and Teles. They both use side tang frets, meaning they go in sideways, not straight down like a Gibson. Keep the neck screws with the neck, the neck plates with the guitar and you should be ok. As long as both are American, Japanese, etc. The scale lengths and string spacings are different. The ony other thing really to worry about is the radius. If the radiuses are different, you will need to have the bridge radiused to match the neck radius. I know it sounds like a lot, but it is soooooo easy. Just don't over tighten things i.e. neck screws, or you may strip them out.
