Hey, I went to my cousin's house yesterday for a birthday and I brought my guitar along to learn a few things because they have been playing guitar for their whole life. But anyway, they said that I should start off with an acoustic instead of an electric. I was just wondering what you thought.

If your main goal is to play accoustic type songs then get an accoustic, if you main goal is to play rock, maybe get into a band etc.. then get an electric. For the most part electrics are easier to fret and do barr chords and stuff (not as much finger strength needed) but you have it really work on string damping, not pushing or bending the strings when you play a chord ect. Accoustics on the other hand take more finger strength to play, but are more forgiving on the string dampening and you don't have to drag an amp around with you. So its a personal choice, I learned on an accoustic, I now own both.

He said that if you learn on an acoustic, then you can play anything on electric.

Its easyer to play an electric but acoustic is a great way to start.

There is some truth to this. While electric guitars are fun and can get you playing with distortion and all that other fun stuff, they are not the best choice to start out on. Acoustic strings are by nature much heavier and take more pressure in order for all the notes to ring true. If you can withstand the bit of finger pain (which will happen on an electric anyways until callouses build up) then I'd definitely recommend you play some acoustic.
Things like bar chords will be good to learn first on acoustic, you may not have all the notes ringing completely true, but after a couple weeks of practice trying them on electric strings will seem like a piece of cake! Hope this helps
