Thought I would start a new topic here. I'm new to recording but have some of the stuff I need to start. I have an Apple iMac, and of course guitar and amp. Unsure about the software and midi interface to connect the computer to the amp/guitar.

I've seen some posts about using Audacity, GarageBand, etc. What's something good to get audio started, then I'll bug you guys about the video part?,, lol.

Thanks

You should have GarageBand already on your comp and if not it is probably in your system discs! GarageBand is an excellent program to start with and is more than capable of very good recording and lets you get your feet wet as far as editing and effects and the like go. Its really easy to set upt too. You can actually plug the guitar directly into the comp with no interface necessary! You can also go through your amp or get a smaller battery powered amp to run it through first. Also, get a LARGE 300GB+ external firewire HD. And when you decide to start doing video get another.

Thanks, was thinking about using GarageBand or maybe another app if need be. Don't have the new MAC as of yet, but was wondering, how do you connect the guitar directly to it?

You just need a standard guitar cord (1/4" jack) with a 1/8" adapter on the other end. Plug it right into the line in port on the iMac and you're set.

Garageband works very well for the price (i.e. free) and is a good stepping stone to Logic Express or Logic if you get more serious about it. Garageband will even let you apply effects in real time if you want to play with some effects that you don't have hardware for.
