Every now and again I like to prank call Guitar Center. Tonight I called and asked if I could rent guitar strings. The guy said no and then asked why I would want to rent strings. I said, "because mine are different thicknesses and I'm pretty sure they're all supposed to be the same thickness." There was silence and then a, "Uhh...". I said, "I got this one string that's thicker than the rest and I want them all to be like that." "But sir, they're all supposed to be different." Then I demanded to speak to the manager. When he came on I asked if they still had the Butterscotch Blond Tele out on the floor. "Yes," he said. "Great! I'll be by shortly to buy it." And hung up.
When they call back from the CallerID I always answer "Washington Music Center, may I help you?" WMC is their local competitor.
I'll call again in a day or two and ask if they will run over a set of drum sticks to my studio. Then argue with them when they refuse to bring them right over.
...too much fun!

It's all about having fun. Some people take breaks from practice and smoke a cigarette, or something (?)... I like to make an ocassional prank call to lighten things up and not take my playing so seriously.
One time I called and asked a guy in the guitar department how to play Stairway. And he tried to teach me over the phone! But I kept playing other stuff like Rock-n-Roll and The Ocean and acted all frustrated that what he was telling me wasn't Stairway cuz I was playing it exactly the way he was explaining it. That call still makes me laugh!

I wish I had the confidence to prank call someone. Those stories are hilarious! I've never thought of prank calling a guitar centre before.
I also didn't realise that music shops gave free guitar lessons out over the phone. :D

I was surprised when the guy tried to tell me how to play the song over the phone. The prank was supposed to be to try to get someone to give me a lesson on the phone. Then when he actually did I had to start playing other songs to get him worked up.

I don't do prank phone calls anymore. the only time i get evil like that is when i deal with telemarketers. I become like this guy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ud8_lXh_AoU (warning: Language) I think telemarketers are a gift from God so that we can release our frustration.:D

Zepp,
That was some funny stuff right there. I was on the floor laughing when I read the prank call asking him to teach you Stairway and you were playing back Rock 'n Roll and the Ocean telling him what he was teaching you was wrong.

Zeppelin, that's funny. Though I think you should send them a pizza at lunchtime for being such good sports.

I think it evens out given the ungodly amount of $$$ I spend there. Plus some of the folks there are now my friends -- we hang out at the BBQ joint across the street, go to each others parties, gather for drinks after closing. And my favorite activity... getting a bunch of them together to go see Lez Zeppelin (all girls, all Led Zeppelin) whenever they come to town.
The ones that have worked there a while know it's me prank calling them. But the noobs have no clue. :)

C'mon leave Zep alone guys, I found it quite funny and amusing. None of you can't say you've never pranked called anyone, everyone at least once in their lives has done it (Most likly when you were younger). I rember once while in a electronics store in the mall(2years ago) they had a small amp and guitar hooked up for people to use for fun, just as I was leaving I cranked up the amp and guitar volume but turned the switch from treble to rhythem(which volume was off at the time), and no later than 10sec after I left, I heard this loud BOOM and followed by the echo of the strings vibrating. Just as I walked back by the store I seen a younger kid who's face was a red as a fire truck, and I was laughing so hard I had to leave the mall to get some fresh air ............GOOD TIMES:D :D :D :D

Hehe, well I don't think anyone minds. It must be mildly entertaining for the staff to get all these calls from strange customers. But the Stairway prank was much better than the first prank!
