we always talk about legends, but who are the worst guitar players yet still famous?
i imagine most of them are country singers.........
i heard the guys from U2 are not really that good and not necessarily well respected for their playing ability..........yet they fill up stadiums........
just curious.....

I think that "worst" really comes from a personal taste preference.
"One man's trash is another man's treasure"
What you may find TERRIBLE may be someone else's entire reason for getting into the guitar!
This thread is going to start arguments... badly! unless of course people stay mature about things and respectful to others opinions.
Opinions are not fact, they are merely how a person feels on a matter. :D
I for example hate it when all a song is is fret-w*nking, whilst this is nice sometimes it gets very boring just hearing middly middly meeee all the time lol

not looking to start a fight..........truly looking to educate myself.....
and as a newbie, i dont want to be sitting a "circle" of respected guitar players and say "man, i really love so and so" and have them turn and look and say .....dude, you must be smokin crack.........
i would like to hear from the experienced that would say..."dang, i cant believe that guy/gal made it to the top".........
so this is not a "troll" thread.......

I notice you didn't have an opinion to share with us:D much like I don't. I can't think of any off of the top of my head. I don't know if it would be a bad player as opposed to one I dislike.

My friend, if you like a band you like them!
Don't let other people's own tastes reflect yours, that's certainly not what the guitar is about at all!
If you like a certain band then be proud of it! Screw what anyone else thinks, you have your tastes and they have theirs and dude that's cool!

I agree with Leviathan-Ran, being yourself, and expressing yourself, be it your taste in music, the way you dress, or what guitar you choose to play, are important in music. Otherwise, it would all be monotonous...

The Ramones.
I like hearing them, but I dislike playing their stuff because they only ever knew 4 chords. And they got rich from it too. Go figure!
Some would say Nirvana. They're one of my all-time favorites. But their songs were more about the lyrics than the playing. How many times can you re-arrange E, A, G, and C?

This is hilarious. Just for kicks I googled 'worst guitarists' and came up with pretty much every name we had listed in the 'best guitarists' thread. I saw Ace, Yngwie, Neil Young, Cobain, Morello, etc...
Just shows you what taste can account for. I personally won't respond to the thread, but I enjoy seeing your comments.

Who is that?... The Eagles? I know this whole thread is gonna get ugly. Sometimes I wonder about Blew. :) Is he intentionally throwing gasoline on the fire, or what?
Senor, I'll answer your question. If you're in a cricle with "respected" guitar players, they'll respect whatever group you like. You may even start a very cool discussion on this group and that group. For instance, some folks dislike Cobain a lot. But his music, his angst, it really speaks to me. Therefore I really like him. Don't let others tell you who to like and not like.

i already stuck my neck out in the thread on legends so i wont go there again. but all i can say is i have heard every guitar player you can imagine criticized at one time or another..eric is too structured...jimi is too unstructured...page is just blues on steroids, beck is too jazzy, etc., etc. all i can say is art is personal taste and no one should really get upset over someone elses opinion. i used to work with a guy who was a jazz freak he LOVED the stuff...me i really dont care for it. i used to make cracks to him like jazz is like guys tuning up on stage or jazz is three guys playing a different song at the same time. he just rolled his eyes and said obviously you dont GET it. and i'm sure that is the case. the point is no one need be offended. were all grown ups here. right? well not me maybe but i bet the rest of you are.

16 posts on a worst guitarist topic and no arguments yet. :) (It makes a nice change to find a forum with a mature attitude.)
Not only that but the one thing that is clearly standing out at the moment, is the fact that everyone agrees that musical taste should be based on personal preference and should not therefore be broken-down into overall best and worst categories.

I see what you're saying about Nirvana there but hey, I think they still sound fantastic. Simple music doesn't neccesarily mean bad music does it? And their stuff is brilliant for beginners like me as it's real easy to learn and keeps up your motivation to push further. I still think Nickleback SUCK though;)

For my two penneth i would reckon 'Status Quo' are the most boring band ever to pick up a guitar. Does boring mean worst? - well i really think this time it does. I think they just use one chord shape in all of their stuff and move it up and down the neck.

:D Not wrong there.
But I suppose some people (apart from Les Battersby - and you'll need to be in England to get that one) must think they're great as they've made a huge career out of it.
Orphan John
February 12th, 2007, 12:11 PM
All hail Les - lol - that was so funny when Quo were on the Street.
I can't deny they have made the kind of careers most of us would love to have. But lets be honest it doesn't make them great guitarists or even good guitarists. I think they are probably just as stunned as everyone else that they managed to become rich and famous just for strumming one chord over and over and over again.
Even though they are famous - have you personally met anyone who is a proper fan of theirs? I know i haven't. I have known people to have liked the odd song but never a fan. So i just can't understand how at one time they were rock gods. Maybe i should get Fortean Times to look into that mystery.

I am new to this forum, so I guess I will hurl myself to the wolves and see if I come out without to much scaring.
I noticed someone googled "worst guitarist" and came up with some pretty amazing axe men IMO. I think some of these opinions come from the younger generations that found rock music through the newer bands (My Chemical Romance, 30 seconds to Mars, the used, etc) where guitar solos and more complex chord progressions do not seem to be as much of a priority. It seems to have shifted to the emotional lyric content. I do like some songs these bands put out, but they are not all that complex. Much like Nirvana, Ramones, etc.
But I could not agree more, with the statement that it is great for a beginner to gain confidence. Heck, I am one of them. To learn a song and to play popular music is a HUGE conifidence boost.
So as a newbie and a beginner I can not comment on who is the worst.

Senor,
When you said that, it made me think of someone else that does something similar.
Paul Stanley of KISS is a great frontman and I have been fortunate to see the show they put on numerous times (I know, I know, I am feeding Gene's ego and pocket book). And in a lot of songs, Paul will play a note or two, then jump around, strut, or whatever, then play another note or two. There are some songs where he plays more, but not much

February 13th, 2007, 04:49 PM
With a lot of his stuff on stage it is for the audience - to wind them up into a frenzy. What they do in the studio is different. They get together and write the music. I have no doubt he knows how to play it - but they have a persona to keep up and thats what the fans want to see.
I am not a Kiss fan in any way. But there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes with any band that no-one sees.

I didn't mean to insult you AceFrehleyGuitarGod - i was just trying to put across that he is still a very good musician and i respect him for that, even though his kind of music doesn't do anything for me.
I respect all musicians no matter what instrument they play or what kind of music they play. Only because their particular brand might not be my choice doesn't mean that they are rubbish. Far from it because there are many colours to a rainbow.
Peace :)

No need to worry orphan, I wasn't the least bit insulted, infact I was agreeing with you. I have seen paul on numorus occasion just jumping around on stage and hardly playing, but when I watch behind the scene videos he's actually playing the whole song in rehearsal and is quite good, but you have to give him credit, even though he jumps more than he plays on stage, can you imagine how hard it is to just jump back in a song and play a few notes without screwing up or hitting a wrong note, now that does take talent to jump in and out without throwing everyone else off or messing up the song in the part of it.

In my opinion, punk bands because they tend to limit themselves to power chords and strumming. Ofcourse, some bands focus on freedom of speech rather than musical ability.

I am also a big KISS fan so I was not trying to use my example as a put down, but more of an observation during their live shows which I think is arguably one of the best live shows I have ever seen!!
But you are right about behind the scenes. Heck even if you get the chance to watch the MTV Unplugged of KISS, Paul plays quite a bit during the performance.

There are some bands I hate that have no idea what music is like the below:
My Chemical Romance (You have to admit, they suck)
Fall Out Boys (These guys are just abunch of freak shows/sellouts)
Slipknot (Well Duh? Cant you see why I hate them?)
All those band's guitarists suck!

How about Freddie Mercury? I love freddie mercury and Queen, but the only song I ever saw freddie play guitar was Crazy Little Thing Called Love. He wasn't bad either, but he only played 2 chords the whole song(The opening riff) If i'm not mistaken I beleive it was the concert they did at Wembly Stadium that I seen him play. A funny thing to me is he never played the guitar in the music video for CLTCL, but wanted to play live in front of thousands of people, man was he a brave person.

I dont know why people slag off Status Quo's guitaring that much. They don't just play one chord. In some songs they repeat the chord progression quite a lot but they also have some good solos in their songs. Check out whatever you want: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l50Fp4l1fCk and also Rocking All Over the World(This is possibly the best song ever written): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fKlORAIYkk
Both those songs have pretty cool solos and they have that boogie feel to them. I wouldn't say Status Quo guitarist knows just 3 chords and built a career out of it cause clearly he is a lot better than that.

so i am watching VH1 and the history of heavy metal/rockumentary etc
they mentioned U2 as being a band that is out there and public loves them but their peers do not respect the band members because they cant "play" guitar...........but since the public doesnt know any better, they get away with a lot of great sounding stuff but simple chord progressions ........
i have looked over U2's stuff and it seems to hold true.........knock on wood, in my cursory search, they dont have a lot of difficult songs to play

here's my take on this: if you go back to roots days you have your chuck berry, bo diddley, buddy holly, etc. put them on a musical 'teeter totter' across from each other and they are pretty well balanced. you may have your fave here or there but basically the teeter totter is moving along nice and steady....now lets jump ahead a few years and you have your clapton, page, hendrix, beck, etc. put them on the board in any order and they are still pretty balanced, the teeter totter rocks right along nice and even....now lets move up to the comtemporaries of the edge. lets see now, that would be, eddie van halen, slash, vai, knopfler.....if you put the edge on the other side of a musical teeter totter with any one of those dudes he gets catapulted right over the freakin' monkey bars. I wouldn't say that, though Frehly is my original guitar hero. Flame me or not, But I think Eddie Van Halen is starting to get over-rated. Yes he came up with tapping, but he hasn't really done much in the past years or so. He is good don't get me wrong but you know what I mean.

Freddy is more of a keyboard player than a guitarist so he was probably just doing that to mess around. With someone like Brian May standing next to you on stage it would be futile to even consider stealing his thunder - lol

I don't think i would even lump freddie mercury in as a guitarist...i was fortunate enough to see the real queen live and he did play acoustic on a few songs..not many...but he also played all the keyboard parts(which there was more of)...he was...and still is, in my opinion the best all around vocalist ever..and that is where the band had him flourish...he only played guitar as a fill...i mean after all they did have a guy named Brian May who did a pretty good job on guitar
