Of you have posted or recorded videos of themselves playing? Just wondering what you used to record yourself with a video camara or a webcam? I'd like to record some but would like a very good clear picture not grainy like the one on my sons webcam. Also what did you record the sound with? I have a decent mic but would like to know what everyone else is using.
I wonder what Tim and Dave use?

I used my digicam's video option, but it came out grainy,
then i tried my webcam and the video still grainy.
Both images are ok, not too bad but not crystal clear.
I just bought a DvD-hadycam and I still have to try
it.

I tried this afternoon recording me playing the intro to Sweet Child of Mine both electric and acoustic. I realize now two things. My ancient webcam sucks. My microphone is busted. I got a nice grainy video with no sound.
Crap.

Hey NapoLoso I hope the DVD worksout for you, let us know the results (picture quality, usabiltiy)
OK Whiskey so your ancient webcam sucks and your micro phone is broken but more inportantly how was your playing;)
I don't have a webcam for the computer in my office/musicroom and if I'm going to make an investment and get something I'd like something that has a really good picture so everyone can get a good look at all my guitar bloopers:o

Actually I learned something. In 17 years of playing I have never videotaped myself or even played in front of a mirror. And even though the picture was bad and there was no sound, I was shocked at how fluid my playing was as far as finger movement goes. I think the whole recording thing might be a good tool to become a better player even if nobody else got to see it.

That's kind of what I want to use it for. I thought I could watch and pick up on spot s that needed work

In general, the cheaper the camera, the grainier the video. Webcams are okay but as you already know they're mostly incapable of shooting "high quality" video. Certainly any cam plugged into a PC is also problematic because you're relying on your PC's processor, memory, video card, etc.
Also, the higher the video quality, the more disk space you need.
I shoot videos all the time. And it's important to point out that I don't press record and then upload. All of my vids get editted in one way or another.
Here's what I use:
-Sony Handycam Digital video camera (mini-DV)
-Firewire card
To transfer video from the camera to my PC.
-An external mic
To improve my sound quality I use an external mic plugged directly to the cam. You can see this mic in my vids -- it's usually in front of the amp or my acoustic. My vids are in another section of this forum.
-Video Editting software
I use Pinnacle Studio. Simple to use and works right out of the box. It allows me to overlay titles. And more importantly, it allows me to overlay my backing track on top of the video. Without the backing track overlay all you would hear is my guitar because the mic only picks up what's closest (and loudest). What I'm saying is, I play to a backing track, then I overlay that same track on the video so that you can hear what I'm hearing in the studio.
-A separate hard drive
I use a separate 80GB hard drive to store raw video as well as finished rendered video. Because I render at digital video quality (highest) I need hard drive space.
Hope this helps.

I havent made any videos yet but I have a Sony Digital Camcorder that plugs into my comp via firewire.
My recording stuff is as follows:
-Numerous guitars (you can find them in the introductions thread on the forums)
-A Behringer mixer
-Shure Beta 87A external recording/live performance mic
-Cool edit pro along with various other recording software
I dont think I am leaving anything out but if I am ill make an edit to this post to add it.
