I like the idea.
Note to Mods: I have a script that will integrate with your forum so people have to be signed up on the forums to use the chat..and their profile follows across both.

The only problem I see from a mod's point of view is that it would be hard to control the content of what is being dicussed. Us mods cant be on all the time and during the off time who would regulate the chat? My opinion, as of now, is to keep the chat seperate than the site and forums. It can be a "fan" based chat. But until we figure out a realistic way to mod chat 24/7 it doesnt seem like something that NLG should be apart of as a company/website.
*EDIT*
This is just my opinion as a mod. My opinion does not reflect the other mods nor does it reflect how Dave and Tim feel about the idea.

This issue was already addressed in the past. As Angelicrock said, its a massive amount of manpower just moderating the content of thousands of posts ... let alone a chat room. There would be no realistic way to control it.
Tim and David have already said in the past that if people wanted to have an off-site chat, go for it. But it would be unofficial and unsupported by NLG.

Here's a chat room run by a buddy..and if you have an interface you can play online in the chat.
http://guitarportal.net/community.html
You do have to register, but it's just another community of guitarists :D
I'll be adding a new version of the same chat just for here soon. I have the same chat program ;)
Please let me know if you want to be able to share video/music in the chat so I can add that as well.

i dont really see a point to a chat room. there are usually only 20-30 members on the site at a time and there are probably only a couple that would actually want to be in the chat. i personally would call a friend if im bored instead of internet small talk.

Some members have already tried starting a chat room:

I think there are enough ppl on this site at one time to warrant a chat box. It would be a lot easier to communicate in some ways, and get to know the other site members on a closer level.

Then whats the point of the forum?

The forum isn't quite as instant. It can take days or weeks to get to know ppl at this rate.

Some things in life are worth the wait. Antici-pay-yay-tion... it's making me wait... Not a chat box fan. Zeppelin_Maniac likes to take his time posting. He likes to think about things and consider what he's about to say. Like referring to himself in the third person. Yeah.......

I was thinking the same thing, chat box's are fun, and it's a fun way to get to know people faster and it's a fun way to spend time while browsing the forum between posts of people replying to things you have said.

call up a friend and go outside. no need to sit and chat online.

For the most part I come to the forums for 15 mins or so, answer any questions that I think I might have some info on. CHeck some of the post I have for answers, and then I close the forum and go to the lessons and practice. I really don't think of coming here for chatting, I have had a couple times where I received a PM from someone asking aobut something I had talked about and have continued through emails to become guitar student friends, and that has been kinda cool. But having chat windows poping up I personally would not be interested it.

My friends that i hang out with don't play guitar...lol
thats why i like to chat with people who do online when they arnt available to hang out. Thats the point of the chat box, to chat quickly and offeciantly about guitars and things we like to do..
some people would also think that this will take away from posts in the forum, but really it doesn't. It's just extra chatting. I ahve been on many sites that have a chat box and the forums are still gettings new posts every minute. And as large as this forum is, i don't see that as a problem at all.

Wouldn't it be difficult to moderate a Live Chat box though? It seems like a good idea, but there are a lot of things that could go wrong in a live chat box... Why don't you just private message each other then if you feel like that person is some one you want to know more about give them your MSN or something...

Everybody has a right to their opinion. Mine is worth what you pay for it just like everybody else’s. I'm not a big fan of the chat box idea either. A forum is completely non intrusive. I've started to PM some of the people on the forum and it works really well. If I want to talk to somebody or they want to talk to me then we can go to msn, yahoo or where ever we decide. I just think having the time to respond makes sense.
My 2 cents worth none. Haha

This is exactly why we don't have a chat box. The mods have a big enough job keeping thousands of posts and threads organised and supported. We've also mentioned in the past that our official stand at NLG is that if you want to chat, do like Rachael suggests and contact the people outside of the site. Its just too big a waste of resources to sponsor a chat room.

It isn't that hard to moderate. Just use the censor, type in all the bad words and censor them. Everything in a chat box is archived and you can go back and read it if something goes wrong or if someone says something wrong.
Or, just add another moderater specificly for the chat box.

But chatboxes need a MySQL database and coding, I am sure Tim and Dave can only have so many databases as they currently using two and I am sure that could make a better use of them then wasting them on a chatbox, though this thread is very tempting for me to make a chatbox.

I just thought of something.
You might think that your wasting a lot of bandwidth with a Chat box but a lot of times you will get questions from people who ask them in the chat box to get an instant reply from someone online can answer the question instead of putting it into a Topic which would take up bandwidth also. So, if anything you might be losing a little amount of band width but at the same time you taking it away from a few other places.

have you guys heard of this site? www.stickam.com someone from nextlevelguitar can create a channel or room for people to drop in and chat. maybe we could hold impromptu guitar lessons or online jam sessions. a mod would have to be there to monitor since there are a lot of weirdos on that site. you can also setup the room to members only or friends only.

There will never be a chat on the NLG site. Too much trouble. Too much work. But there are other options.
I have means. I have ways. And I have mean ways...

Lol..or you could just create a stickyed topic with a list of everyone's AIM or MSN on it so people could just add people and just start chatting whenever.

There's been several requests for chat and other features.
I started working on a site with Nlsstar and Ian that will allow the members here to post their vids so that only other NLG members will be able to see them. While we complete the video hosting portion, feel free to sign up and use the chat rooms.
The site is located here:

10 againist 1 for, I am glad to hear that we will never have a chat box on this forum, it will for sure take away from the responses that we get in the forum, people will post a question and answers and comments will be givien back and forth in chat instead of being posted or follow up response will be so the majority of the members will not get the benifit of the post. I guess that if I was 14 or 15 I would want to spend my time chatting on line, but at over 50 I would rather be playing my guitar than visiting people online. When I have that much free time I go outside and do something.
