In my experience, you'll be hard pressed to find a half of a half stack for $300. If thats all you are looking to spend you might find a bunch of decent lower wattage combos, but I doubt you'll find much more. Used gear can go for amazing prices sometimes, but its safe to say you generally get what you pay for. :D Peace

Someone just wants a half stack to say they have one. You aren't going to find tone worth $300 from a $300 half stack.

then I would ask myself do I really need a half stack????? You would have a much better chance of finding a good combo amp in that price range, that would work for most any type of playing. Eigther used or new. FOr new check out something like the Vox valvetronic 30 watt, or one of the others that have been mentioned on this web site. Unless you already have a real good head, then even a twin might work out well.

This is just curiousity on my part...but why would you need a 1/2 stack?
I play through a 36 Coupe (Combo amp) that at 1/2 volume rattles the walls...where are you playing that you need a 1/2 stack?

i thought half stacks were the only thing loud enough to be playing with your band and stuff

Naw..not at all. There's TONS of combo amps out there that you can use...the Kustom DFX65 and DFX100 come to mind really quickly ;)

I gotta feeling that my 40 watt blues deluxe can work playing in a band :-)

Half stacks, although loud, are not always necessary, even for a band. They are really a pain to move around because they weigh a tonne, but a decent solidstate combo anywhere from 65 to 100 watts will provide you with more than enough volume, or ~20 + tube watts. I'm sure you'll find that the volume and tone will be there without that back problems later in life;).
If you have anymore questions, fire away!

My personal opinion, get a rogue combo amp. I have an old one I bought from a pawn shop, I changed all the wires out myself and it sounds better than most cabs for a half stack.

Personally I would not worry about getting a half stack until I had roadies to move and set them up.

That is SOO true! I already find hauling my gear to be a pain (sometimes for real) due to the weight of my amp and then 2 guitars...my gig bag...etc.
I couldn't even fit a 412 cab in my car...lol
I think anyone looking at 1/2 stacks should consider how much space it takes to move them :)

The bad back and space issues are absolutely common situations. If you ask any half stack owner that hauls there gear around alot about the pros and cons, they'll all say lugging it and then carting it around as the number 1 or 2 complaints. It usually costs me a few beers, but I almost always bring a "friend" to gigs to help me carry stuff. If I didnt have a van, carting it around would be a real pain aswell. I use 2 2x12 cabs and it is akward enough, my back tenses up just thinking about muscling around a 4x12 cab.

My Crate CR160 is only 60 watts and I used to drown everyone out in our band room. My drummer used to tell me to turn it down that the neighbours were complaining and that was only on half like Dis's Kustom amp. Don't be fooled by the size of combo amps! Most of these amps can hold their own against more expensive half stacks where it counts. Add another 2-300.00 dollars to your budget and look at the Line 6 half stacks if that's what you really want! They are loud and are priced more affordibly then most large brand name amps. Remember too that most music stores that sell guitars and amps have layaway plans. So that might be an option worth looking at too. That's what I had to do with the Line 6 Spider III HD150 half stack I just bought. Sometimes layaway is the only way to get what you want. I hear ya Dis on the space issue for half stacks I have the perfect place for mine and that is under my train layout lol.

Bit off topic but a question, what wattage amps do real bands use... like what amount of watts would you need at a concert like live earth in wembley stadium- or Glastonbury?
I always thought it would be thousands of watts!... Now i'm thinking i could be wrong.

Once you get into larger venues most bands plug into the PA system so the sound man can do the mixing. Actually..even in smaller venues most bands do this if they can so they can get better mixing and someone else can boost signals depending on the song and what is needed to get the best possible sound for each tune ;)

You should check out randall amplifiers, they have either a 2 speaker system with either 2 15's or 2 12's cant remember but you could research and find it, they have a great tone for a solid state amp, they guy selling it for 210 i doubt will last you a long time, I have a halfstack i am selling and i dont know how they can afford to sell it that cheap if it is good, but just be weary of a good deal. some times is to good to be true. just dont get burned bud

Not sure if you are still looking, but Musician's Friend is blowing out their lower-end Crate half stacks in the $300 range. I think for that money you can do a lot better with a smaller combo, but if you have to have a head and a 4x12 cabinet... there ya go.
