It really depends on where you live and what the humidity is like, as a gen rule humidifiers are used in the winter months when the air is realy dry, optamim for a guitar is around 45% I beleive, so first check the room where you play the most to see what it is. In the summer months when the humidity is real high a dehumidifer is sometimes necessary, for most people living in a controled enviorment I don't think that its an issue that they worry about much, I use both a deH in the summer and a Humidifer in the winter, I also heat with a wood stove mostly so it can really dry out. I tried the "string type of in guitar humidifier and really did not like it, it was a mess to use, yuo had to bend it a certian way, I ended up getting a PlanetWaves one that fits through the stings, it works real well, I also use a real plug in wall dehumidifer in the summer, I live in an old farm house so air tightness is a problem. I have fairly high end guitars so I try to take care of them, here is a link to the type of between the strings one I use, I also had the in the case kind, but you have to velcroe them in and if they work loose they will bang around againest your guitar, also since it is the body that needs the control the most the one through the stings just makes more sence..

Then I would say that the 12 bucks or so that the PW one cost would be a good investment, also once you get them use distilled water in it only, a gal cost you about $1.00 and will last ???? I throw mine out and buy a new bottle every winter, a pint would probably last a year or more
