As I have a non-photogenic memory I rely on patterns and mnemonics as memory aids.
While practicing the C major chromatic scale (W-W-H-W-W-W-H) where W is a Whole tone step and H is Half step tone I though the following might help others.
If you find those B and C notes and those E and F notes on the guitar's fret board... you'll see a box pattern emerge.
Why are B and C, E and F important?
Other then they are the half (H) tone steps in C Maj. they have no flats or sharps between them. This eliminates them from the remaining notes having flats and sharps... there leaving only 3 more note positions to locate on the fret board.
Which suggests memorizing the natural notes (notes that are not sharp or flat) first because the sharps and flats will follow above or bellow them on the fret board. EOM
