Have you ever asked yourself: Am I really getting better? Don't worry, we all do at some point or other. The fact is you are getting better it just so gradual that you don't notice it.

I'm not sure how many of you get and read the Acoustic Guitar mag but it had a practice/motivational tip to make it obvious to you your hours of practice are paying off in this months issue that I thought was a good idea.

Keep a practice journal where you practice and make entries every practice to keep track of your progress. An entry might read:

" Practiced changing from chords G to D strumming quarter notes at 60bpm, found keeping third finger down through the change difficult."

So for your next practice session ,focus on that third finger.Keep a record of your metronome speeds. After a while you'll be able to look back and actually see your progress and how you've overcome the trouble spots or mastered a technique.

Nice tip. I once had another guitar player who I look up to tell me that there was a difference between practicing and playing. I thought about it after he told me this and realized that I don't practice nearly enough even though I play all the time.

Great tip blew. Another good thing to do is video tape your practice/jam sessions. I recently started playing with other people and we have been video taping the sessions. It's amazing to see the progress.

"Another good thing to do is video tape your practice/jam sessions" Great tip Taz! That way if you stumble across a great riff or come up with the next big hit you can have it recorded so you don't forget it.

thats exactly what rut I've been stuck in for months. just playing what i know and not practicing at all. I've changed that today! Got the metronome out and started to PRACTICE! ;)
