I assume you have a PC since otherwise you would use GarageBand on a Mac.
The best free recording software, IMO, is called Audacity. Just do a google on it and you'll see the link. It's at soundforge.org I think.
It will allow you to do multitrack recording as well.
There's a few other threads on the board about Audacity with links and stuff like that. Lemme know if you need help.

thanks for the info. yea i looked up at the other threads now(sorry for repeating one) and i saw some other information. I'm kind of looking for a solid recording system that is around 200-300 bucks. I looked up "cakewalk and other stuff". Im looking for anything people who have used it or have any experience with any software.

I've been messing around with Mixcraft 3 (Find it HERE) (http://www.acoustica.com/mixcraft/) and I am really enjoying it and it only cost about 50 bucks. There is a demo on their site. You can look up reviews of it as well.
There is also software made by m-audio called Session (Find it HERE) (http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Session-main.html) but I haven't used it. I was considering it though. There is a tour video on the site to show you what it can do. Mixcraft seems very similar.
As far as higher end stuff, I think the m-audio company offers higher end recording software as well. M-audio is owned by Avid who is a big name in video editing as well.
Hope this helps.
