I had a tonal break through yesterday playing White room by Clapton after playing with the volume and tone on my Strat, amp and Bad monkey overdrive pedal, I finally got the tone I was looking for really close to Clapton's. then I got thinking I should write the settings down some where because the next song I play will be way different.
So here's my tip keep a book or if you are logging your practices( like my other tip thread this could go in the back) write down all you settings for each song or artist so you don't have to waste time trying to find the tone again. I'm sure multiple songs from the same artist(and possibly others) will have the same settings.
Just a thought.

Very good idea especially if you have an amp with lots of settings like a Line Six or Vox.

That's a great idea Blew. Guitarworld Mag also has a section that is similar, it's sponsored by Boss I believe. They show some popular songs, and then have a picture directly underneath with the pedals and settings used to get that particular tone, which I found an awesome feature. It goes right along with your idea, and I think both are great.
As guitarists we perpetually are adding pedals and gear and trying new things, and it's easy to forget how you got a certain tone you liked. Writing them down is a great idea. Gives me spreadsheet ideas..
Even with some basic equipment, say a guitar, practice amp, and maybe a distortion pedal, you have hundreds if not thousands of combinations. Take a strat with 5 pickup settings, (or 9 if you use David's trick potentially), a basic amp with volume gain treble mid low and your overdrive button, and a pedal with say a 3 band eq and tone and volume. That's a TON of setting combinations, and thats only a guitar amp and one pedal.
Got a little long winded there, but what can I say, the idea inspired me.
Rock on dude.

Good thinking. I wish I was at that level where stuff like that mattered. I'm still working on my open chords and you can do that on any 'ol un-amped thing.

You will very quickly get to a point where you are experimenting with sounds and tones, just remember have fun and follow the lessons and you'll be improving faster than you would believe :)

Blew, if you are still reading this thread....
Just curious because i've been tinkering with this song as well, what were your settings? No tube amp here so i turn my gain up a bit too far on the DS-1 to get that broken up sound.
