Default Can Ya help a brutha out?

Strings, like guitars are as subjective as any other items. I have been questing for the "Perfect String" and I have purchased about every standard or stocked brand in music stores in a 25 mile radius of my city.

I just purchased a used Epi, 56' re-issue Gold Top and the store owner said the previous owner just put NEW STRINGS on it. It played like butter and sounds better then anything I currently own (mind you that is 30+ guitars). I have an slight aversion to leaving the strings on used guitars (like changing oil in a newly purchased used car).

I played the Gold Top for a few days before I took the time to change the strings to my current favorite, Ernie Ball Super Slinky pinks. Prior to the change out I mic'ed the old strings with a Micrometer to make sure i wasn't changing the gauge of the strings and therefore screwing a perfect set-up up.

The strings that were on the Epi GT were the identical gauge of string i replaced them with but had a RED SILK WRAP on the ball end of the string. After the change I had to raise the saddle just a fraction due to a small buzz on the top 3 strings. It still sounds great (P90's), and plays very nicely but not as good as it did before I changed the strings.

My question: Does anyone have experience with a string mfg'er that wraps their standard 6 string with red silk?

Sheshhhhhh after re-reading this before submission I sound like an ADHD geek with anal retentive tendencies! But I still want to find these strings!!!! The owner said he would ask the guy next time he is in to see what strings he used, but that could be a few weeks.

ANYONE HAVE A CLUE!?!?!?! Cuz I sure don't! LOL

the silk wrap on the end of the string should not make a differance, unless there is enough of it that it actually rest in the saddle, my guess would be the string metal and coating would cause the differance in tone, feel, ect. Bronze, nickel, phosferous coatings, stainless ect.

I agree EZ, I think it had more to do with the string itself then the wrap. But the wrap was the only physical/visible characteristics I had to identify the string maker. I've seen BASS strings that are silk wrapped (seems to be the norm) but never run across any 6 string with wraps.

It may just all be in my head anyway .LOL But I sure would like to know if that is the case by putting them on another guitar or the GT Epi.

Thanks for the response!

Sounds like he's trying to identify the string brand via the wrapping, not necessarily search for others that wrap similarly hoping for like tone from them.

As said, though, I think D'Addario wrap the ball ends.
