Hello Good People – David Taub here from Next Level Guitar. Tim and I are really stoked to bring our unique teaching techniques to you in Full Screen DVD format. In this two-hour DVD I break down and explain in our easy to digest format the classic rocker SMOKE ON THE WATER by DEEP PURPLE. This is the full on song lesson and when we say “full song lesson” we mean it. We teach ALL the song parts – intro, verses, rhythms, chorus, outro, all chords, strumming, arpeggiation, embellishments, licks, full guitar solo, and more. You learn the techniques as well as the song, so then you can blast them all across all your playing and practicing. Plus we teach you all the tricks and tips on how to cop the feel of the song.

The song is broken down and explained and demonstrated at slow speed and regular speed. We break each section into digestible parts and we get you playing and rocking out in the fastest and most efficient manner. If you are familiar with our teaching methods you know that we take songs sections one at a time and break them down into smaller sections, explaining every piece as we go along. Then we show you how to tie everything together. We also have on screen text, multiple camera angles, picture-in-picture two camera shots, and close ups of the fret hand to make the learning process even easier.

DVD Introduction – In this introduction David discusses the lesson format, the structure for the coming song lessons, and how to piece the song together in the fastest and most efficient manner. David also talks about the techniques needed to cop the feel of the song as well as a very interesting brief song history of this classic rocker. He also talks about the gear and tuning used in the DVD and how he gets the needed tones as far as guitar, pickups, amps, and effects. He discusses pickup and amp settings as well as different gain/distortion levels and effect levels.

Main Riff – In this section David takes you through that famous main riff – probably one of the most identifiable riffs in all of guitar rock. You will also see the chord names and fret numbers flash on the screen with our on-screen text and close ups of the fret hand so you see everything up close and personal with a tight shot of the neck. Having this text makes learning even easier and ties it all together. David also teaches you chord playing techniques and shows you string muting techniques that will help to clean up your playing and cancel any unwanted string noise. David plays the riffs at slow speed and regular speed and at the end of the lesson does a play along so you can practice and play along with David. It’s all explained in digestible pieces as per our easy and fast teaching methodology. All along David gives other tips and tricks to make your playing easier.

Verses & Chorus - In this lesson you will learn the rhythms and chords used in all the verses and chorus in the song. David takes you through the progressions and all chords with both wide and close up camera angles. They are played at both slow and regular speeds and you get it all up close and personal with close tight shots on the neck. David breaks everything down and shows you how to connect the pieces together. David also shows you various ways of playing the parts. So you can learn as per the original recording or you can fill up the sound if you don’t have a organ player and need to fill up and round out the sound. You will learn various ways to play these sections and you have the option of picking which fits your playing scenario best. David shows you all the little nuances that make this song cool and you will be copping that smoke on the water feel quickly.

Guitar SoloIn this section you will learn the complete guitar solo. David goes over in easily understandable pieces each and every lick. Each lick is also broken down and played at slow and regular speeds as well as demonstrated and explained with a tight shot of the neck. David also discusses the theory behind the solo and what scales the lead is mainly taken from. David teaches what fingerings work best for fluidity, and how to piece the entire solo together – you will learn it all up close and personal. He explains all the techniques that make this solo cool – the string bending, heavy vibrato, hammer-ons and pull-offs, and tremolo-arm use. This is a phenomenal piece of guitar and you will be playing it just like the CD in no time.

Outro & Complete Song Practice This section of the DVD is divided into two subsections. In these two lessons you will learn the song outro and a great play along practice tool. Just like all the previous parts you get on screen text and David takes you through the outro at slow and regular speeds. You also get a practice exercise of David playing the complete song. This is a great practice tool as you only hear the guitar and David plays the rhythms in the whole song at original recording speed. Here you can tie everything together that you have learned to this point. Play along with David as you master this classic rocker!

Bonus Lessons This section of the DVD is broken down into two separate technique lessons. These lessons will help you understand, and possibly expand on some of the techniques and concepts that are used in Smoke on the Water and many other songs. David goes deep into the below techniques and explains them in depth with up close shots tight on the neck and on screen text to tie it all together – this lessons will help get your playing to the next level..

1. Hammer-on & pull-off lesson with exercises In this lesson you will learn the proper techniques to use when playing hammer-ons and pull-offs. David goes over some of the most common mistakes made when attempting these lead playing techniques. David explains the importance of finger strength and dexterity and how that will improve your tone. With up close camera shots, David teaches the proper finger positioning and all the tips and tricks necessary to get these techniques solid. He also gives you tips on string muting that will clean up your playing and help eliminate string noise. You will also learn a series of exercises to help improve finger strength and dexterity while practicing your hammers and pulls.

2. String bending lesson In this technique lesson you will learn the proper techniques to bend strings properly. String bending is one of the most expressive things you can do on the guitar and you will really want to get proficient at these techniques. David teaches the importance of bending in pitch and the concept of bending to a “target note”. He goes over some of the most common mistakes made when attempting string bending. David also teaches the importance of proper fingering and proper positioning when bending strings. He also teaches you great practice techniques to get your bends dialed in perfectly.
